Dual Credits

Dual credit classes are considered college-level classes within our building that count for high school credits and for college credits. They are taught by our high school teachers at a much lower college tuition cost than if the student were to take the same class in college. Students have the opportunity to earn dual credits if they meet the dual credit requirements set by the participating college. Dual Credits are one of the qualifying criteria available for students to take in order to fulfill their Academic Honors or Technical Honors Diploma.

What is the difference between Honors, AP, or dual credits?

Will my Dual Credit class transfer to my future college?

Most college degrees require 120 credits. Usually 80 of those credits are within your major or area of study (ex: Business or Education). This typically leaves the remaining 40 credits as electives (classes you choose). Indiana has developed the Core Transfer Library (CTL), a list of dual credit classes that will transfer among all Indiana public universities, assuming adequate grades.

All Core Transfer Library classes will count as general education (classes required for all incoming college freshmen) or as electives at an Indiana public university. A significant majority of CTL courses will also count towards your 80 credits within your major. For example, assume a student is enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program requiring an American History I course. That student can take any course listed in the CTL under American History I, and have that course count towards their degree requirements. Work is being done with private Indiana colleges to determine how to accept dual credit classes. If students choose a dual credit course NOT on the CTL, they should directly contact the college they plan to attend to see how that course can be used at that institution.

How Do I Sign Up For a Dual Credit Class?

1. Student requests the class in their high school schedule. PLEASE NOTE - A class being designated as dual credit in a student's schedule does NOT mean they are actually enrolled in the dual credit portion of the class. They must finish the steps below.

2. Student fills out the application to enroll in that particular college:

  • IUSB classes - Application for dual credits will be given by the classroom teacher in class.

  • Ivy Tech classes - Application for dual credits will be given by the classroom teacher in class.

  • PFW classes - Students must fill out the online application and the online course request form. Contact your classroom teacher or counselor.

  • Purdue classes - Process for dual credits will be provided by the classroom teacher in class. Dual credits depend on the passing of one exam through the ACE Program. See more information here.

  • Vincennes classes - Application for dual credits will be given by the classroom teacher in class.

3. Students wishing to enroll in a PFW dual credit course, need to submit the PFW registration paperwork, be accepted by the university and complete tuition payment with PFW to receive dual credit. Students are responsible for any additional tuition costs charged by the participating college for dual credits.

4. Upon completion of the dual credit class, students need to request a transcript from the dual credit college and send this transcript to their future college / university. Failure to follow through on this step will result in the student's future college not including their dual credits.

Please Note: Student must meet the college's criteria to officially enroll in the dual credit portion of the class. It is possible for a student to be in the high school class, but NOT be enrolled as a dual credit student if they never fill out the college's required dual credit application. It is also possible for a student to have filled out the application, but NOT earn the dual credits if the college denies their dual credit enrollment for not meeting their prerequisites. Please check the Course Description Guide for these prerequisites. If their high school schedule says they are in a dual credit class, this does NOT mean that they are listed dual credit with the college.

For further information see the class teacher or your counselor.

Dual Credit Questions?

Q: I took a Dual Credit class in high school. How do I transfer the credit to my college/university?

A: The school you plan to attend will require an official transcript FROM the college/university in which you earned the dual credit (not your Wawasee transcript). If you took dual credit courses from multiple colleges, you will need to fill out a transcript request (links found below) for each school from which you earned dual credit.

Q: How do I know which high school courses I took for dual credit?

A: Look at your WHS transcript (there is a copy posted to your Skyward portfolio) the dual credit courses will have a DC beside the grade earned.

Q: How do I know what college I earned the dual credit with?

A: Ask your teacher or go to the Dual Credit page in the Course Description Guide .

Q: What about AP classes?

A: AP classes are handled differently than dual college credit. To transfer your AP credits, you will need to log in to your College Board account and request your AP scores be sent to your college. Remember, only scores from 3-5 result in college credit. Scores lower than a 3 do not need to be reported to your school.

Q: When do I need to request my college transcripts?

A: College transcripts will not be available until you complete the course & your high school teacher turns in your final grade. If you completed the course in a previous year, you can request your transcripts now. You should also make a list of all dual credits earned (with college and course information) and bring it with you to your college orientation/registration. Make sure your advisor knows of all dual credit courses taken prior to registering for Fall classes.

Q: How do I order a transcript from the dual credit college or university?

Check with your college to see if they require a transcript directly from your dual credit college or if they will accept one from you. You will need to know this before requesting a transcript.
