Exceptional Students, Exceptional Education

Submitted by Mrs. Jennifer Grime, Director of Student Services

No matter how old a person is, there is one thing that everyone seems to have in common. We all have a desire to feel valued and respected. At Wauseon Schools, we value each student that walks through the doors of the school building. We know that every single student has a special gift to offer. In addition, we understand that not all students are created equally, nor do they learn in the same way. Some of our most exceptional students are those with specialized needs. We believe that exceptional students deserve an exceptional education. It is our goal to ensure that each student has the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills consistent with his or her potential to achieve.

What does special education look like? The answer is not simple, because special education looks different for each student! The amount of support that students receive is dependent on the amount of needs they have. No matter how mild or severe a disability is, our teachers are able to make necessary adaptations in order to support each student. By offering a continuum of services, we are able to meet the needs of a wide range of students.

While we strive to teach our children independence, we know that they still need guidance navigating new or unfamiliar situations. Whether your child is new to special education or has been receiving services for years, transitioning to something unfamiliar can be frightening. As we approach this new school year, there is perhaps more uncertainty now than ever before. By working together, parents and teachers can ease a student’s anxiety about a transition. As your child navigates this change, please remember to communicate with your teachers, they are here to help.
