ART HISTORY CREATION

ALFONS MUCHA

"Art exists only to communicate a spiritual message."

I think my main reason for choosing Alfons Mucha is the diversity of his work. He dabbled in everything and was very similar to another artist I love... Leonardo DaVinci for being a "Renaissance Man". He was a painter, sculpture, jewelry maker, etc. Regarding the style of his work, I love his color palletes, the graphical nature of his fine art because of his background in poster design and lastly the beauty of his content within the art.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau, a popular art movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is characterized by its emphasis on intricate, nature-inspired designs, flowing lines, and the use of vibrant colors. It often featured themes of beauty, femininity, and a desire to create art that blended seamlessly with everyday life, including architecture, furniture, and decorative objects.

I chose to use Feldman's Critique Model to help describe what I love about this piece! You should try to use it too!

Describe : How would I describe this piece to someone on the phone?

Analyze : What artistic choices is he making within this piece? Elements / Principles?

Interpret : What story is he trying to tell? What emotions are expressed?

Judge : What about this piece made it stand out as the best?

Why did Mr. Patton Choose this?

Describe : This looks like a black and white watercolor or perhaps ink piece. I see two human figures surrounded by little demon-like goblin creatures.

Analyze : The contrast used within the characters is really captivating. The glowing eyes for example really tempt you to look at every single creature in the background. The highlight that exists in the movement of flowing lines of the gown is beautiful against the darkness of the background. It really leads your eye into that moment being emphasized between the two figures.

Interpret : What I feel when I look at this is being surrounded by darkness but feeling a sense of comfort and peace. Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath and remembering that everything can work together for good despite the chaos around me. As a parent I also feel a sense of responsibility in protecting my own children from the evils of this world.

Judgment : It's beautiful. It's dark... but it's beautiful. It's very illustrative and imaginative. It definitely tells a story and leaves you wondering. I am a sucker for black and white but would still love to see how Mucha would have colored this piece in his style.
