At East High School we pride ourselves on challenging our students with the most rigorous coursework. We also highly value our students being prepared to not only move to post-secondary education but also have be a few steps ahead.
Waterloo Community School District offers a variety of concurrent enrollment courses taught at East, West, and Waterloo Career Center (Lowell and Central locations), ranging from nursing courses to graphic design courses (for more information about these courses, please see our CTE page). Many students are choosing to pursue college coursework through the numerous concurrent offerings located in both East and West High School. We also have students choosing to pursue coursework off-campus at UNI. Concurrent and PSEO offerings are for both high school and college credit.
While high school students' schedules don't always align, and we preach simplicity and balance, we do all that we can to make sure our students are set up for success.
PSEO/Senior Year Plus
By an act of the Iowa legislature, students may enroll in courses at post-secondary institutions. Funds for the enrollment will be provided by the local school district, provided the student meets the admissions requirements of that post-secondary institution and that the course(s) taken are not offered by the school district. Credits are awarded by both the post-secondary institution, and East High School. PSEO Courses are available to Juniors, Seniors, and students tagged as "Talented and Gifted".
Concurrent Enrollment Courses
Dual enrollment gives high school students the opportunity to take approved courses through Hawkeye Community College while completing high school graduation requirements. High school graduation credits and grades will be awarded by East High School and placed on to the high school transcript. Concurrent courses are offered at East, West, Central (WCC), and Hawkeye Community College. Most concurrent courses requires students to be a Junior, Senior, or "Talented and Gifted" to enroll. However, there are certain courses that all grade levels may enroll in.
Please see your counselor for an approved list of courses available.
How are Students Notified?
Counselors review concurrent and PSEO options with students during course request meetings at the start of 2nd semester.
Teachers also recommend students to sign
What Happens After Students Sign Up?
Students who have expressed interest in taking concurrent/PSEO courses will be invited to a registration session with Hawkeye and/or UNI.
Students will receive a pass inviting them to registration. Announcements will also be made over the intercom, through email, and text reminders.
Student Social Security numbers are required to enroll.
Classes requested by students must fall within the Senior Year Plus Guidelines (issues often encountered include: grade level, high school already offers comparable course, and course not approved by WSCD).
Some students will be required to bring home paperwork to have a parent/guardian sign (this depends entirely on course being requested). This paperwork must be returned by the deadline.
After the student has been registered on the college's end, the high school counselor will adjust the student's schedule accordingly.
It should be noted that college courses taken outside of East High School do not take priority over courses needed for graduation.
All paperwork and meetings with students must be completed by November 30th (for Spring semester college courses) and May 15th (for Fall semester college courses).
Fall Semester College Courses
During the summer, students will receive a letter in the mail informing them of their enrollment in a concurrent course.
This letter will also include information on drop dates for the college and the high school.
This is the ONLY form of communication students will receive about their college courses before they begin. Students are responsible for logging into their MyHawkeye accounts, and looking at their schedules on Infinite Campus to determine the time and location of their course.
Spring Semester College Courses
Depending on the course, 2nd semester schedules may include the college course on the actual schedule. Not all courses will be included on schedules (particularly courses outside of school hours, or outside of the building) and it is expected that students will remember that they signed up for a college course.
Students are required to log into their MyHawkeye accounts to determine where their class is located, and the class times.
If a student is interested in dropping their college class (this includes WCC), they must speak with their counselor first.
It is important to speak with counselor when dropping college courses as it could impact Financial Aid eligibility later and alter GPAs.
