HOMEWORK:
Be sure to check Canvas for assignments, schedules, and other information.
Email Ms. Tiernay if you have questions or concerns!
Late and Missing Work
Work that is missing will be reflected in the academic and/or behavior grade.
I do not accept late work for reading responses (Socratic Seminars, Lit Circles, Book Clubs).
If absent, work should be still be submitted on Canvas. I do not accept work via email.
Please be aware that final essays and projects are always due on their due dates, regardless of whether you are in class. This policy is in effect because students are given several weeks to work on essays and projects. Also for that reason, being sick for a few days before a due date does not necessarily mean an extension will be given. It is expected that students do not leave their long-term projects & essays to the last minute. Consider the due date the last day that assignment will be accepted (whether you are in class or not).
GT Magnet ELA Work Improvement Policy
Essay Improvement Plan
Writing in the magnets is always focused on the multi-step writing process leading to stronger and more improved writers. We want the best from each and every one of our students. We understand that students sometimes do not reach their goal score with a particular essay. If the student received a grade below a C (70%) and feels unsatisfied with their grade, they need to approach their teacher for the opportunity to rewrite within two days of receiving the initial graded essay. Students can earn up to full credit on their rewrites. The number of possible rewrites will depend on the teacher. The steps toward that rewrite are as follows:
1. Fill out Improvement Plan and turn it within two days after the assessment/assignment has been returned.
2. Meet with the teacher for a brief conference. You will need to bring a copy of your original work and the graded rubric.
3. Take notes on your relearning activities and apply this knowledge to your rework.
4. Rework the assignment/assessment.
5. Write a brief letter comparing the attempts. Answer the following:
What is different?
What did you learn about yourself and the learning process as a result of reworking the assessment/assignment?
What decisions did you make that created success?
6. Submit:
The original work and the subsequent one
The original rubric
The reflection letter
Evidence of learning (notes)
The Improvement Plan Contract is posted in Canvas.
Project Improvement Plan
Projects in the magnets allow students to practice higher level thinking, research skills, and Common Core State Standards. We work very hard to provide pacing, work time and checkpoints to help achieve the best possible product. We understand that students may feel unsatisfied with their grade on some assessments and projects. If the student receives a grade of less than a C (70%) and they would like to improve their score, they need to approach their teacher within two days of receiving the initial graded project for the opportunity to rewrite. Students will be required to complete a redo contract. This contract needs to be signed by the student, teacher, and parent/guardian. The number of possible rewrites will depend on each teacher.
