Instrument Selection

Process and General Information

Each of our elementary school band directors have the flexibility to shape their instrument selection process in the manner that best fits their building, but the basic elements of the program and the recommended Menchey Music rental procedure are the same in all schools.

Review the following information before reaching out to your building music teacher for clarification.

Explore the Instruments

All learners have exposure to the instrument families and unique timbres (sounds) of band and orchestral instruments through the elementary general music classroom. In some cases, the music teacher will also present a demonstration session of the instruments available to 5th grade band members. Learners joining in middle school or high school need to seek out the band director for more individualized help.

4th grade learners have an opportunity to try several wind instrument mouthpieces to find a best-fit for their body. Even if they may struggle on a particular mouthpiece, passion/desire goes a long way to overcome obstacles; difficulty does not necessarily mean that they cannot select that wind instrument.

Some options have personnel limitations. Your school music teacher will communicate those considerations as needed.

Learners and families are encouraged to seek out more video/audio recordings of their preferred instrument to understand all of the sounds it can produce.

Complete an Interest Form - Building Specific

Each of our teachers uses a paper interest form or a fillable online Google Form to collect interest data and basic contact information. Check with your school music teacher in March or April if you need additional information.

Attend the Instrument Selection/Rental Meeting

We offer two informational meetings in preparation for 5th grade band, but all learners/families are welcome to attend. Dates are advertised through regular building communication (like a "Boro Blast" message). Attendance at only one of the meetings is recommended unless you require assistance.

Make a Commitment

Follow Through

Elementary band (and even in to middle school) is a time of exploration. It is OK to decide that band is not for you/your family, but we very strongly encourage completion of the school year. There are fun changes to be had as learners grow and are capable of more complex music. To continue ensemble music at WAMS and WASHS leads to greater musicianship, friendship, collaboration, LEADERSHIP, and a sense of belonging. Often, to know that you enter the next stage with a large group of friends eases the transition to middle school or high school.

Instrumental music is not easy, but it is so worth the effort!
