Social/Emotional
Social Stories:
It can be difficult to explain what is happening to your young child. He may have trouble understanding why school is closed and why they are not going places they used to go. She might have challenges with being out of her usual routine. Check out the Social Stories and the Behavior tabs for some ideas on how to best explain this situation to your child.
Feelings
You can use these pictures to help your child to identify and express feelings. Start by modeling how you feel and explaining why using this page or certain pictures as a visual support. Keep it simple. Use a phrase like "I feel ____ because _____." Then, ask your child to point to or say how he feels. Reinforce and acknowledge how your child is feeling. I will provide a "Feeling of the Week" lesson each week for you and your child to review together to get started on these feelings.

The Importance of Routine:
Having a sense of routine and purpose is important for everyone in times like this. Work on creating a schedule or routine for your family. You may want to use visuals depending on your child’s reading and language levels. Consider giving stars or crossing off activities as they are finished - this can give you and your children a sense of accomplishment.

Happy - Feelings Lesson
Here is a short lesson or presentation that can be used to talk about feeling happy.
Freeze Dance
Dancing makes a lot of people happy! It's a great way to get some physical movement and exercise when we have to stay inside. Freeze dance is a fun game. Incorporate listening, following directions, self-regulation, and motor control by playing freeze dance with your child. Turn on some music, any music will do. Explain to your child that when the music stops, it's time to freeze. When your child is dancing, pause the music. At first, you may need to remind your child to freeze when the music stops. Have fun!
