Acanthosis Nigricans (AN)
Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) serves as an indicator of risk for Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. All students in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades are screened for acanthosis nigricans. This screen is typically done at the same time as vision and hearing screens. If a student is positive on the AN screen, further screening will take place in the spring.
Exclusions/Refusal
If a parent so chooses, they may request their child be excluded from the screen. If requesting exclusion, parents need to notify the school in written form with a signed and notarized affidavit, prior to the day of screening. It is recommended that the screen still be completed by the parents choice of medical provider and results of the screening be given to your campus nurse.
If your child is already under care of a medical provider related to the specific screening, please notify your campus nurse with current treatment documentation to be placed in the student's health record. Once written documentation of care has been received, student will be exempt from screening.
