Core Boards & Visual Supports

Communication boards can be used to introduce the power of language and of Core Vocabulary. They can be used to model language and increase participation. Combined with activity specific words, they can be used to make activities, such as reading books, accessible and engaging. (AAC Community) During a typical school day our Early Childhood Special Education and Functional Academics Classes, students and teachers use core boards and visual supports to help students navigate activities and transitions. Below you can find links to videos and activities to continue incorporating visual supports while at home.

Early Sign Language

  • Choose signs that your child can USE to make a difference in their world. Teach words for things they already tries to ask for first since knowing what your kid wants when they are crying, grunting, and pointing makes a HUGE difference in reducing their frustration level.

  • Choose signs for your child’s favorite things since they will be more motivated to use their new signs.

  • Initially choose signs to teach that look very different from each other so that you and your child are not confused. (Teach Me To Talk)
