Physical Education

Redwood High School offers two physical education programs to meet the specific needs of our athletes and our non-athletes. Athletes are expected to participate in the physical education program offered for them as a way to ensure that they can best meet the physical demands of their sport safely and competitively.

9-10 Grade Program for Non-Athletes

Course Title: Core Physical Education

Course Description: Core Physical Education is a coeducational physical education class designed to meet the goals and objectives of the California State Framework for Physical Education. Physical Education 1, the first physical education class in the high school sequence of instruction provides for instruction in a variety of fitness areas including aquatics, rhythm and dance, and individual and dual activities. The course is structured around a component curriculum which emphasizes varied daily activities designed to meet student fitness goals, interests, and skill levels. Classroom instruction supports individual fitness and health, including instruction in nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, and personal safety.

Course Description: P.E. 2 is a co-educational class for 10th, 11th and 12th graders, offered as part of the two year physical education graduation requirement. Students will be introduced to games emphasizing team sports and physical fitness concepts. Sports such as football, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, soccer (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, badminton and softball will be offered. Curriculum will include discussion of fitness components and participation in fitness activities that promote personal improvement and life-long wellness.

Course Title: Integrated Core Physical Education 1

Course Description: Integrated Core Physical Education is a co-educational class designed to meet the goals and objectives of the California Content Standards for Physical Education. The course is designed for freshman students who plan to compete in interscholastic athletics. Curriculum integrates weight lifting and plyometrics with lifetime activities including volleyball, aquatics, basketball, softball, rhythms, and badminton.

Course Title: Weight Training

Prerequisites: Completion of Integrated Core PE 1 or comparable class with C or better. Must be in athletic program.

Course Description: This course is designed for the student interested in developing speed and power for athletics, physical fitness, and daily living. Students take an active role in the learning process. Standards set forth in the California State Framework will be addressed using Olympic lifting as the theme. The class includes initial development in the techniques of proper lifting followed by testing to determine baseline strengths and abilities. Students will demonstrate an eagerness to question, collaborate and improve skills.

Course Title: Sports Therapy and Fitness Technician

Prerequisites: Health and one year of successful completion of Science

Course Description: This two-semester course will provide participants with skills in athletic training, physical therapy, and fitness instruction. Background information in basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, ethical and legal issues involved in medicine, and medical terminology will be provided. Participants will also receive training in First Aid and CPR. Course content will include the care and prevention of athletic injuries, therapeutic treatments, and rehabilitation exercises. Students will learn the proper use of fitness equipment and design appropriate exercise programs.
