STRONG (Sports Therapy, Rehabilitation, Orthopedics and Neuromuscular Gains)

The El Diamante Sports Medicine Academy is a pathway for students to experience high school in a new, different, and innovative form.  The vision of this academy is to strive to prepare students for leadership roles in medical careers through learning opportunities in the evolving kinesiology community.  Students enrolled at El Diamante Sports Therapy, Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, and Neuromuscular Gains Academy will gain an understanding in the areas of prevention, treatment, and management of illness and injury as well as the preservation of mental and physical well-being not only in sports, but in life by focusing on the study of many sciences including Biology, Kinesiology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology throughout the 4 year tenure at the home of the Miners.

Course Description:  STRONG1 is a two-semester Sports Health Science Academy course that will provide participants with skills in athletic training, physical therapy, and fitness instruction as well as fulfill the requirements and address the federal and state mandates for instruction as well as the state framework for health education in California.  The course study will focus on personal health and wellness, with an emphasis on the development of responsible decision-making skills in relationship to a healthy lifestyle. Course content includes life skills focused on healthy choices in the areas of nutrition, fitness, stress management and social/emotional health, substance use and abuse, growth and development, and reproductive health.  Background information in basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, ethical and legal issues involved in medicine, and medical terminology will be provided. Participants will also receive training in First Aid and CPR. Course content will include the care and prevention of athletic injuries, therapeutic treatments, and rehabilitation exercises. Students will learn the proper use of fitness equipment and the design appropriate exercise programs. In addition, participants will develop valuable job search skills including job applications, resume writing, and job interview skills.

Course Description: This two-semester course is the second of four courses within the STRONG Academy sequence of courses. Students will learn skills as they relate to the  various fields within the Kinesiology umbrella.  Students will be exposed to the historical and organizational perspective of kinesiology, detailed anatomical and biomechanical study of the skeletal and muscular systems with special focus on each major body region, physiological response of tissue, specific medical conditions and injuries, scientific principles of injury prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, exercise physiology and human performance.  Students will obtain in-depth knowledge in anatomy and physiology of the skeletal and muscular systems as they relate to movement, medical terminology, ethical and legal issues as they relate to various kinesiology professions, and sport psychological theories.  Students will receive training and possible certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as well as use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in accordance with the American Red Cross Lay Responder course. Finally, all students are required to observe and participate in a variety of settings including theory, classroom lab practice, and group presentations.

Course Description:  This is a second year, advanced course for the college preparatory student who wishes to acquire a greater breadth and depth of knowledge of the principles of biology with an emphasis of anatomy and physiology. This course is designed for students who may be interested in a career in the health related fields. Homework and laboratory work are an important part of the curriculum.

Course Description:  During this Capstone STRONG Academy course, students will learn skills as they relate to the fields of medicine, with an emphasis in prevention, care, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. Students will be exposed to the historical and organizational perspective or sports medicine, detailed anatomical and biomechanical study of each major body region, physiological response of tissue, specific medical conditions and injuries, scientific principles of injury prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, exercise physiology and human performance.  Students will obtain in-depth knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, emergency medical transport, ethical and legal issues as they relate to the different fields of medicine, and psychological theories.  Students will receive training and certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as well as use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED).  In addition, students will gain knowledge about different medical careers as well as obtain observation hours within a field of their choice.  Finally, all students are required to observe and participate in a variety of settings including theory, classroom lab practice, and after-school sporting events.
