The El Diamante Sports Medicine Academy is a pathway for students to experience high school in a new, different, and innovative form. The vision of this academy is to strive to prepare students for leadership roles in medical careers through learning opportunities in the evolving kinesiology community. Students enrolled at El Diamante Sports Therapy, Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, and Neuromuscular Gains Academy will gain an understanding in the areas of prevention, treatment, and management of illness and injury as well as the preservation of mental and physical well-being not only in sports, but in life by focusing on the study of many sciences including Biology, Kinesiology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology throughout the 4 year tenure at the home of the Miners.

Course Description: STRONG1 is a two-semester Sports Health Science Academy course that will provide participants with skills in athletic training, physical therapy, and fitness instruction as well as fulfill the requirements and address the federal and state mandates for instruction as well as the state framework for health education in California. The course study will focus on personal health and wellness, with an emphasis on the development of responsible decision-making skills in relationship to a healthy lifestyle. Course content includes life skills focused on healthy choices in the areas of nutrition, fitness, stress management and social/emotional health, substance use and abuse, growth and development, and reproductive health. Background information in basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, ethical and legal issues involved in medicine, and medical terminology will be provided. Participants will also receive training in First Aid and CPR. Course content will include the care and prevention of athletic injuries, therapeutic treatments, and rehabilitation exercises. Students will learn the proper use of fitness equipment and the design appropriate exercise programs. In addition, participants will develop valuable job search skills including job applications, resume writing, and job interview skills.

Course Description: This two-semester course is the second of four courses within the STRONG Academy sequence of courses. Students will learn skills as they relate to the various fields within the Kinesiology umbrella. Students will be exposed to the historical and organizational perspective of kinesiology, detailed anatomical and biomechanical study of the skeletal and muscular systems with special focus on each major body region, physiological response of tissue, specific medical conditions and injuries, scientific principles of injury prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, exercise physiology and human performance. Students will obtain in-depth knowledge in anatomy and physiology of the skeletal and muscular systems as they relate to movement, medical terminology, ethical and legal issues as they relate to various kinesiology professions, and sport psychological theories. Students will receive training and possible certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as well as use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in accordance with the American Red Cross Lay Responder course. Finally, all students are required to observe and participate in a variety of settings including theory, classroom lab practice, and group presentations.

Students will obtain in-depth knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, emergency medical transport, ethical and legal issues as they relate to the different fields of medicine, and psychological theories. Students will receive training and certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as well as use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). In addition, students will gain knowledge about different medical careers as well as obtain observation hours within a field of their choice. Finally, all students are required to observe and participate in a variety of settings including theory, classroom lab practice, and after-school sporting events.

Course Description: Sports Psychology is designed to provide students with knowledge about psychological factors that affect performance in sport and exercise such as motivation, concentration, focus, confidence, burnout, goal setting, life balance, attitude, character development, leadership, coach/athlete relationships, anxiety and relaxation. Students will be introduced to mental skills that will enhance performance, make athletic participation more enjoyable, and learn skills that can be transferred to other aspects of their lives. Specific skills addressed in this class will include: how to set measurable goals and strategies to achieve them, visualization and imagery techniques, leadership, team building, and how to cope with injuries/loss/letdowns. This course would serve as a companion course to the senior level capstone course (Adv. Sports Medicine) for our STRONG Academy.

Course Description: This course is designed to teach the fundamental skills necessary for both administrative and clinical duties in a physician’s office or a medical clinic. Students will learn and practice skills required for Medical Assistants through core curriculum and simulated clinical exercises, including the ability to prepare patients for examinations, treatments, perform a variety of standard laboratory procedures, assist with minor
surgical procedures, and maintain patient health records. A clinic internship is required to receive the Medical Assistant certificate. CPR and First Aid certifications are included in this course and are awarded based on competency examinations. Students who complete this program will be eligible to take the California state exam to obtain Certified Medical Assistant status. This course requires 150 hours of theory, 10 hours of injection clinic, 124 hours of a clinical internship at a medical facility, and 18 hours of review in a classroom/skills lab setting.

Course Description: The Nurse Assistant Training Program course prepares students for certification as a CNA by the State of California as an entry-level worker on a health care team in a long term care facility. This course follows the 2018 CDPH approved Nurse Assistant Training & Assessment Program (NATAP) Module Curriculum and includes 17 Modules of theory instruction and clinical hours. It also includes instruction and certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support for health care professionals. The course is conducted in a classroom and at a community training site (long term and intermediate care facilities). Completion of this course and CNA certification is a requirement for admission into regional Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) programs in the local area. Area CA State Universities and CA Community Colleges recommend CNA course completion and certification for admission to their Registered Nursing programs.
