Media Arts Academy

The El Diamante High School's Media Arts Academy is a pathway for students engage in a wide variety of new media, including film production; digital graphic design; prop, costume and make-up design; broadcast TV production, photography and image manipulation and acting/dramatic performance.  With this specialized content, students will receive resources and instruction in the core class of English and their Academy class, specifically tailored to the goals of the academy. MAA is rigorous and challenging, both academically and creatively.  This four-year intensive academy will bring together all aspects of technical knowledge and creatively culminating in a senior film project. This project will incorporate screenwriting, special effects, production, financing, marketing and distribution of the student made film of professional quality.  This, upon completion of MAA, students have a completed portfolio highlighting their work.

Course Description:  Students in this yearlong course produce high-quality videos suitable for entertainment and local industries. Instruction assists in the development of a strong understanding of the language of film in a real-world, hands-on production studio that supports the learning core academic skills. Production skills includes story development, script writing, camera skills, shot composition, lighting and sound, film editing, and publishing.

Course Description:  Physical Education 1 is a coeducational physical education class designed to meet the goals and objectives of the California State Framework for Physical Education.  Physical Education 1, the first physical education class in the high school sequence of instruction provides for instruction in a variety of fitness areas including aquatics, rhythm and dance, and individual and dual activities.  The course is structured around a component curriculum which emphasizes varied daily activities designed to meet student fitness goals, interests, and skill levels.  Classroom instruction supports individual fitness and health, including instruction in nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, and personal safety. Academy students will focus on filming of individual sports to support school media projects.

Course Description: Media Arts 1 is an introductory course for the Academy of Cinema and Television Arts that explores two-dimensional and Three-dimensional art forms through lecture, demonstration, technology and projects.  Projects incorporate creative expression with art history while encouraging the exploration and imaginative growth in art through discussions, presentations, technology, research and writings all focusing with the production of a Movie as the guide.  Units of study include Research, Copyrights, Elements of Art, Digital Media, Sculpting, and Make up application.

Course Description:  P.E. 2 is a co-educational class for 10th, 11th and 12th graders, offered as part of the two year physical education graduation requirement. Students will be introduced to games emphasizing team sports and physical fitness concepts. Sports such as football, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, soccer (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, badminton and softball will be offered. Curriculum will include discussion of fitness components and participation in fitness activities that promote personal improvement and life-long wellness. Students will focus on filming of sports and positioning to best capture on film.

Course Description:  Media Arts 2 is an advanced CTVA course and continuation of the Media Arts 1 course which focuses on set design (video/stage), sculpting, molding, casting, prosthetics and application, make-up and computer-based special effects. Common collaborative projects will support the Advanced Cinematic Arts course and/or Drama theatrical productions. Students will create flats for set building and build sets based on the needs of the film students and/or drama program utilizing various materials and techniques.  Students will further develop 3D special effects skills and techniques in sculpting, molding and running latex, foam latex or silicone for masks and prosthetics. In addition to computer-based special effects. Students will gain experience in various techniques used in the film special effects industry.

Course Description:  This yearlong course develops a deeper understanding of film as a powerful medium for communication and artistic expression. The curriculum places greater emphasis on analyzing landmark works in the industry, producing original work, and publishing work to a wide audience. Students refine their filmmaking skills in script writing, cinematography, editing, directing and producing. Students use high-end equipment and learn advanced techniques in all aspects of filmmaking, which include cinematography (composition, lighting, and audio), post-production (editing, foley, color grading), and publication (theater, web and mobile formats). Advanced Filmmaking CTVA is the 3rd year course sequence in the CTVA academy.

Course Description:  Advanced Cinematic Arts is an advanced culminating Media Arts Academy course that allows students to fine tune their skills while establishing a professional grade portfolio through lecture, demonstration, technology and projects. Projects incorporate the technical aspects of filmmaking as well as a focus on the aesthetic decisions and their effect on an audience while encouraging students to find an internship or a job, or attend college through discussions, presentations, technology, research and writings all focusing with the production of a professional 8-12 minute short film as the guide. Units of study include the technical aspects of audio and color correction, artistic expression and the effect it has on an audience, self-management and career focused skill building, media copyright laws and filmmaking ethics, creating a short, professional, film as a package, and exploring jobs and professionals in the industry.
