Important Notes:
*Keep in mind these could be triggering questions for many students
*If student self-reports lower than a 5 on a sliding scale question, possible counselor referral needed
*If student has a difficult time (beyond appropriate shyness) answering many of these vulnerable questions, a possible counseling referral may be needed
*If a student shares any yellow or red flags with you let them know that you WILL touch base with the school counselor, but they can choose if they want to proceed with the counselor
Runaway Student
*If student is a minor follow the steps below*
o If parents report that student is a runaway, ask parents for police report #
o If there is an active police report and the student shows up to the school, report to the police immediately
o If minor is a runaway and parent is not involved or taking action, then a possible CPS report/consult needs to be made. ***Notify admin/counselor***
o Do not promise too much to parents – We are here to support the student/please keep us notified” – it is not your job to go out of the way to find the student
o Coordinate with SST Coordinator - Re-entry is recommended*
*If student is an adult, contact parent ONLY with student permission - support student where they are in that moment
“I am so glad you are back! How are you doing?”
“It is so good to hear from you/ I am glad you are safe/we missed you!”
“Have you spoken to your parents? Do they know you are safe?”
“What is your relationship like with your parents right now? What kind of communication do you have?”
“Do you feel like you have to run away again? Do you feel like you have support or have somewhere to go if you feel like you need to run away again? Resources/do you know who to talk to etc.”
