Action Steps for Supporting Students Using the Stop Light Binder
1. Use of the Stop Light Binder - The Resource Stop Light Binder is designed to assist all staff with tools to determine what level of support a student may need.
A. GREEN LIGHT: This section is intended for use with students that are generally doing well and may need resources.
● Please utilize the green section to share resources with students
● Following student interaction please send your school counselor a referral/email for the student you supported and note the resources provided
● Document in contact Manager: Green Light Resources provided- referral to school counselor submitted (copy & paste in Contact Manager)
B. YELLOW LIGHT: This section is intended for use for a student who you suspect is or may be in future crisis.
YOU WILL NEED A THOUGHT PARTNER when using the yellow section: School Counselor/School Social Worker/School Psychologist/Site Administrator.
● Ask Probing Questions provided in the Yellow Section
● If your Thought Partner is not a member of the Student Support Services Team, the Thought Partner will need to contact a member of the Student Support Services Team for consultation.
● Following student interaction please send your school counselor a referral/email for the student you supported and note resources provided including names of other staff supporting.
● Document in contact Manager: .ie. Yellow Section Support provided- referral to school counselor submitted. Next call School Counselor to notify of student need/outcome (if not already involved)
Red Light: . You MUST work with a School Counselor/ School Psychologist/Site Administrator or School Social Worker. Intended for use with students that are actively in crisis and need immediate assistance
C. Red Light- Continued:
● Inform Student that you will need to collaborate with a Student Support Services Team member, as they are another safe person to assist with support.
● If your Thought Partner is not a member of the Student Support Services Team, the Thought Partner will need to contact a member of the Student Support Services Team for consultation
