The STEM in Community Learning Series consists of a suite of dialogues targeted at 13 to 17-year-olds and educators with the aim of raising awareness of STEM, its relevance and impact in building a sustainable and resilient Singapore. It seeks to encourage the next generation to explore and get adventurous in STEM. This is conducted online with a virtual interactive component
2026 marks the fifth iteration of the series, where we invite the best within their fields of Science/ Innovation/ Technology and Impact to speak and inspire our students and teachers toward a sustainable STEM-enabled future.
Session 1: From Engineering to Entrepreneuring : On Becoming a Next Generation Problem Solver

Synopsis
Dr Thio will share his journey from engineering research and academic leadership across several top universities to founding Ryse Education, highlighting how technical training unlocks diverse career paths. He will illustrate how an engineering mindset—grounded in creativity, collaboration, and adaptability—enables the solving of real-world challenges and prepares individuals to inspire and develop future innovators. Whether pursuing research, leading in education, or venturing into entrepreneurship, the skills and perspectives gained from engineering empower meaningful impact in both addressing real-world problems and guiding the next generation. This sharing is for anyone interested in engineering, education, entrepreneurship, or making a difference through people development and mentorship.

Session 2: From Smart Cities to Smart Nation: A Research Framework

Synopsis
The rapid pace of urbanisation and growing population are exerting tremendous pressure on cities from environmental, economic, infrastructure, and social perspectives. Numerous Smart Cities initiatives around the world are developing solutions to mitigate these pressures. Singapore is on a journey to become a Smart Nation. In this talk, we will discuss some research and technical challenges in realising the vision of the Smart Nation. We present a holistic R&D framework to support the development of technologies and applications for the Smart Nation. We also highlight our recent efforts in developing and deploying real-world smart systems across various application domains in Singapore.
