VVA Elementary News
5th Edition
January 2024
Meet-Ups: Thanks to the families who supported our December meet-up on Monday, December 11th, 2:00-3:00pm (pictures above). Check out the flyer below for our upcoming meet-up at the newly opened Pala Vista Park on Monday, January 29, 2024, 1:30-3:00pm.
Dr. Martin Luther King Day: Monday, January 15th is the observance of Martin Luther King Day. This is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – “a day on, not a day off.” Check out the Points of Light webpage for opportunities to be of service in our local community.
Fastbridge Assessments: Students will be taking mid-year math and reading assessments during the week of January 22th-26th. Make-up assessments will be available the week of January 29th-February 2nd.
Independent Reading: Remember to encourage your student to read independently for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. All students have access to the Sora library app that links to the San Diego County Public Library. Students have access to thousands of audio and e-books through the app. Here are some simple tips for supporting independent reading at home.
Questions/Concerns: If you have any questions or concerns that have not been answered in this newsletter or during parent meetings, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Ordonez using the contact information below.

How Can I Help My Student With Online Learning?
During online instruction, each student will need the support of a Learning Coach, typically the parent or guardian, who is present while the student is working at home. As students progress in their success with online learning there is an increase in independence.
The role of the Learning Coach includes but is not limited to:
Guide the student through the lessons, tools, and games as needed.
Oversee assignments and help facilitate hands-on learning.
Check for understanding and discuss concepts being taught.
Keep the student on schedule and on pace.
Ensure all components are done with fidelity.
Communicate with the teacher as needed.
Celebrate success🎉
Edgenuity
Edgenuity is our learning engine/curriculum.
Students are enrolled in 5 classes: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and PE.
Additional electives are available on request.
Art
Coding
Keyboarding
Students are expected to spend 45 minutes to 1 hour per day per class, for a total of 225 minutes per day.
Attendance is based on work completion and attendance at synchronous (Zoom) meetings. Make sure your student completes assignments by designated due dates and attends all required Zoom meetings.
If you come across science labs or other assignments that require materials that your family doesn't have, please contact Ms. Ordonez so she can excuse or modify the assignment.
