Artifact One (Classroom Expectations/Management Syllabus)
Explanation: A Classroom Expectations/Management Syllabus plays a critical role in establishing a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment by clearly outlining the norms, procedures, and values that guide interactions and behavior in the classroom. Creating a syllabus at the beginning of the year ensures students understand what is expected of them and what to expect in the class. By having students as well as their parents/guardians sign the syllabus, it shows the teacher that everyone has acknowledged the information. If a student or parents has any questions or concerns, they are then able to discuss and collaborate on ideas that best works for all parties involved.
Artifact Two (Symposium for Inclusion Reflection)
Explanation: Participating in the Symposium for Inclusive Excellence allowed me as a future teacher to listen to personal experiences and gain insight on obstacles diverse populations face within educational spaces. It broke my heart hearing numerus stories of students being treated and talked to unfairly by teachers as well as their peers. With the knowledge and understanding gained from this experience, I feel I am better equipped of seeing and addressing the needs of diverse learners. I want to strive for a classroom where students are free to express themselves and their culture without the fear of retaliation from others.
I also feel it is important for educators especially to be aware and accept that we all have bias, but it's how we act on those biases that determine what kind of teacher we will be.
