CORE ACTIVITY: Scavenger Hunt (50 minutes)
Adapted from Create the Change by Emily Frank
Materials: Powerpoint slides (print out each slide on a full sheet of paper), Intervention worksheet, Stickers (e.g colored dots)
- Post powerpoint slides around the room (or slightly hidden). Distribute a worksheet to each participant.
- Station rotation (20 minutes)
- At each station, students should write down the name of the intervention, whether they like/love/dislike it, whether it would work for the cause they are working on, and other comments about it. You can either do strict timing with students rotating every 5 minutes or let students rotate on their own. Goal is for each student to explore at least 8 interventions.
- Share-out (10 minutes)
- Organize students into groups of 4-5 and ask them to share their ideas about different interventions. Each group should discuss benefits and challenges of the interventions for the issue that they are working on.
- Vote (5 minutes)
- Give each student two colored dot stickers. They should place these stickers on the slides of the interventions that they are most interested in. Tally up the votes for each intervention and write them down.
- Group discussion (15 minutes)
- As a large group, discuss the interventions that received the top three highest number of votes. (Depending on your class resources, you may choose to discuss fewer or more options) The goal is for students to organize into teams that will each focus on a particular intervention. Decide as a group on the interventions that you will focus on, and the composition of the different teams.
