The first few times I tried doing a two-stage carve I experienced the issue of the spindle moving a bit while changing the bits. It was very frustrating losing my home position mid-carve. Thankfully there is a solution. It involves a two-part process to change the idle torque settings which are explained below. More information on Torque Reduction can be found in multiple threads on the Inventables forum here.
Step 1: Change the dip switch settings on your controller board. You'll need to open up your X-Controller to slide out the board. Locate the three (3) dip switches on the board. Slide the #4 switch on all three of them to the OFF position.
Step 2: In GRBL setting $1 is the duration that it holds the torque. $1=0 is the minimum and $1=255 is constant hold. turning the dip switch off and setting $1=255 will force the X-controller to give full holding torque at rest.
Start by clicking on Machine, then Advanced.
Next, click on Machine Inspector.
Finally, in the Console field, enter $1=255 and hit enter.
That's it! Your X-Carve will now hold full torque at rest making it much, much easier to change bits during a two-stage carve.
