Warrior-Scholar Project’s (WSP) College Success Workshops are one-day, multi-session workshops that engage participants in discussions about accessing, preparing for, and succeeding in higher education. Workshops are taught by WSP fellows who are student veterans with years of experience guiding participants through the transition from service to higher education. WSP offers six separate modules (shown below) that can be combined to create a tailored College Success Workshop that best fits your campus and participant needs.

The Warrior-Scholar

Mindset

WSP considers gaining awareness of mindset and learning mindset tools integral to the transition process. This session covers what’s known about fixed and growth mindsets and the mindset continuum. Through readings, interactive discussions, and in-class activities, participants are introduced to The Warrior-Scholar Mindset, which centers self-awareness, purpose, knowledge seeking, and resilience.

Analytical Reading

& Note-Taking

Analytical reading and note-taking are two fundamental and essential skills for any college student. This session teaches participants how to assess and skim, read with purpose, and summarize an author’s argument in their own words. Participants will engage in hands-on learning and by the end of the session will be able to name various reading strategies, develop a reading strategy plan, and apply one or two strategies to a current reading.

Attention & Time

Management

One of the primary keys to success in college is learning how to manage attention and time. Being reflective and knowledgeable about attention and time management practices allows students to make intentional decisions about which academic strategies to use and when which sets them up for success in and outside of the classroom. Through interactive discussions and activities, participants will examine attention and time management strategies, identify opportunities to improve focus, and apply tools to manage workload and schedule.

Identity & Community

Conversations about identity and community are common in higher education. Preparing students to navigate and participate in these conversations is an essential part of the transition process. Understanding identity, in relation to culture and community, also helps students make more informed, intentional decisions. By engaging in intentional, supportive conversations, participants will explore the veteran and student identity in a higher education setting, compare military and college culture, and examine the vital role of the community in the transition process.

Informed Consumer

There is so much to know about going to college—types of institutions, areas of study, the application process—and it can feel intimidating to even begin. Being an informed consumer of higher education means knowing where to begin so that the process doesn’t feel overwhelming. In this session, participants will compare different institution types, connect college-going decisions to career plans, anticipate the college application process, including determining financial need, and identify available resources.

Hidden Curriculum

All college programs have curricula or a set of courses or modules that act as a road map for learning. All colleges also have what’s called a “hidden curriculum,” or unspoken norms, policies, or expectations. For example, knowing whether or not one actually has to buy the textbook or read everything on the syllabus for class is part of the hidden curriculum. This session gives participants the skills they need to interpret syllabi, prepare for attending office hours, practice asking intentional questions, and develop a networking plan.
