Case Study Day Four

Note: The following are broad guidelines and not meant to be prescriptive. We have assigned readings and specific case studies, but Case Study Leaders (CSLs) should use their discretion when planning and teach to their specific expertise while ensuring students meet the learning objectives below.

The fourth day of case study learning focuses on building on what was covered so far this week and applying concepts learned in the seminar on leadership and management to the assigned case study, which is increasingly more complex than the cases they worked on for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students should work in new groups on the case study.

Learning Objectives

• Build on understanding of the use of case study (as an analytic learning tool)

• Determine the type of case study assigned

• Apply business ethics concepts learned in class to reading, understanding, and responding to the assigned case

• Understand the value and challenges of working in groups, applying concepts of organizational behavior

Readings & Assignments

• Read Chapter 7 in The Case Study Handbook

What Students Know

• Students will have completed three case study sessions on Monday,Tuesday, and Wednesday

• Students will have completed these fellow-led sessions on Sunday:

  • Case Study 101

  • Business 101

  • Public Speaking

  • Organizational Behavior

• Students will have attended a two-hour seminar in the morning on leadership and management

• Students will have varying understanding of and experience with case study

CSL Role

CSLs provide a core service in our Business boot camps by ensuring that WSP participants experience what it’s like to complete case study projects in a real-life setting. This experience helps to instill confidence and prompt motivation to pursue higher education. Your role on this day is to ensure students build on what they learned in the first three case study sessions, expanding their understanding of the function of case study and how to apply concepts learned in class from responding to cases. Your role is also to ensure students feel comfortable moving from working in one group to another. See other one-pagers for more on the role of CSLs.
