Title of the talk: Profiles and treatable traits of functional status in respiratory conditions: evidence and challenges
Abstract: Chronic respiratory diseases are highly heterogeneous and complex. Heterogeneous because not all characteristics are present in all people at a certain time. Complex because there are pulmonary and extra-pulmonary features of these health conditions which interact dynamically (among each other) and not linearly, i.e., they do not occur in the same way over time. Often, we focus on the heterogeneity and complexity related with lung function, symptoms (namely breathlessness when there are many others), number of acute exacerbations or hospital admissions or even comorbidities, neglecting one of the domains most meaningful to those living with these conditions, which is the functional status. During this talk, we will i) understand the importance of functional status; ii) explore how this domain can(‘t) cluster and behave over time and iii) how this information may contribute to improve our understanding of the heterogeneity and complexity of these health conditions to optimise results, since this domain is identifiable/measurable, clinically relevant and possible to be modified.Alda Marques, is a physiotherapist since 1999. She did her Masters at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2003 and her PhD at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom in 2008.
