Above Lt Wooldridge's account of the Aklam mission describes being met by hundreds of fighters of all types and a "lopsided job with one motor on one side, the fuselage on the other and a half rudder." He was describing the Blohm and Voss BW 141 Reconniaisance plane with only about twenty eight manufactured.
Below, Lt Wooldridge crew flies B-17 42-29787 named "Wilder Nell" on this mission. The photo shown is a different crew and was reported MIA over Bremen November 29, 1943. 9 KIA - (five were never recovered and 1 was POW.)
"Wilder Nell" crew under B 17 with pilot Chas Lefevre goes down Nov. 29, 1943. 9 KIA, 1 POW. Five are never recovered. This was not the Wooldridge crew but was the plane he flew on Oct 9.
Below, the three page account of Anklam mission, target, aircraft component plant. 600 miles (966 km) each way as crow flies. With strong fighter attacks, the Wooldridge crew runs out of ammunition. 8th Air Force records confirm this mission was Oct. 9, 1943.
