Mission 17 Munster, Germany Oct 10, 1943
B-17 42-30298, above is the ship that Lt Wooldridge flew on this mission. The K symbol for Kimbolton's 379th Bomb Group is seen on the tail. The plane originally was named "Tender Tit Tillie' (look, I don't name these things) and later "Ragin' Red" visible above.
I've given this mission ** asterisks because of the interesting emergency landing after the crew runs low on gas and the visibility is zero.
This mission dispatched 274 B-17s and 39 B-24s to Munster and other targets, hitting rail and waterways. The 8th Air Force lost 30 B-17s with casualties 2 KIA 18 WIA and 306 MIA.
The situation was about to get a lot worse for the 8th Air Force at Schweinfurt in four days. Link below to that mission.
