During my second year of teaching, I again focused on three different areas I wanted to grow as an educator. My 2nd grade team changed this year, and I had a new coworker who previously taught 1st grade (for almost 10 years!). With that, I decided a great first goal was to focus on collaboration between our team to ensure my new teammate felt supported while making sure our curriculum was aligned between the second grade classes. My next goal was in partnership with my graduate adult education course through Michigan State University. I wanted to become better at communicating ways for parents to support their students in the area of phonics. Using what I learned about androgogy, I developed a phonics parent resource and a plan for distributing it. My last goal focused on student growth, as it is required by the state. During my first year of teaching, I came up with three goals that I collected data for throughout the school year. My first goal was focused on student growth in reading development. 2nd grade is a very important year for reading development, as studies show students start to develop their inner reading voice. My second goal was about communication regarding math instruction to parents. Our district just began using bridges math and wanted to work to familiarize parents with new homework structures, new assessments that would come home, and other elements of bridges that may be different from the previous math curriculum. My third and final goal was centered on classroom organization. I made this decision due to our district's new flexible furniture and the different considerations that come with such a large structural change.
