History and Records

Wolf Creek Cemetery began in 1857 with the first burial of Fanny Trimmer.  The land was owned by Dr. Samuel Deneen.  We have little information about the early days of the cemetery, but know that it soon became a Sterling Town Cemetery.  In 1938, a non-profit group was formed, the Wolf Creek Cemetery Association which has been in charge of the cemetery since 1939.

The cemetery has an annual meeting in May, where major business is done.  Anyone with a lot in the cemetery can vote on issues at the annual meeting.  A board is selected for terms of 5 years with new openings every year.

The cemetery has few old records, with very little information before about 1950s.  A map of lot ownership and burials was created in about 1912, passed on to the new board in 1939.  In 1939, the 8-grave lots (16x20 feet) were marked at the corners with a concrete filled metal can that can be found under the sod with a metal detector. At that time the new board attempted to list the burials in the cemetery from talking to people, what records they may have had and by gravestones.

So, our information is certainly not complete!  However we can attempt to look up information as to the burials in the cemetery and to unused graves in family lots -- contact the sexton.

There are three old record books that are in the cemetery safe.  They have been scanned and can be seen online

Oldest Cemetery Map

This map is approximately 100 years old.  It is a fragile drawing on a window shade.  We have photographed it in parts.

The Wolf Creek Cemetery is approximately 6 acres and includes several purchases to extend it over its life.  Currently the West Addition is open and has graves for sale.

The drawing above shows lot numbers.  The white on the right is the "North Addition" added in the 1980s.    The light blue is the original cemetery. It has been extended to the west, and to the south (purple and orange) and now to the west -- not on this diagram.
