Burns

Burn injuries make up 1% of all hospitalisations for injury in Australia, however they are often the most serious, resulting in numerous repeat admissions and long lengths of stay.

The NSW Burn Model of Care was updated in 2024, replacing the previous model of care released in 2012.  The case for updating the NSW Burn Model of Care was supported by:

• injuries from the 2019-20 Black Summer in NSW

• the repatriation of 10 burn injured patients from New Zealand following the 9th December 2019 White Island eruption

• the ongoing threat that global warming will increase the likelihood of mass burn casualty disasters.

There are several nurses skilled in burns assessment and dressings in the department.

All burns cases should be discussed with a senior medical officer.
