Feedback

People receive feedback in various ways every day. In education, students receive verbal and written feedback from their teachers. Efficient and effective feedback equals academic improvement. Wise feedback is a multi-step approach to giving feedback aimed at helping students rise to teachers’ high expectations based on students’ ability level. When teachers employ wise feedback, students receive specific, differentiated, future-oriented feedback needed for their academic success.

Throughout the VPLM, taking notes will be helpful. You can use the linked guided notes document to keep track of your learning throughout. You will need to click File - Make a Copy in order to make the notes document your own and be able to type in it.

Notes you collect during the VPLM can help you on the final assessment - a combination of recall and application questions.

Consider the feedback you provide to students currently.

Below is a short student work sample from a student named Keisha. The prompt students had to respond to is: Identify one aspect of Okonkwo’s character in Things Fall Apart and analyze how it has been developed so far in the novel. The skill students are working on is analysis in a short written response. Read the student work sample from Keisha, and record the feedback you would provide to her under Challenge on your guided notes document.

Keisha's Work Sample: Chapter 5 shows Okonkwo's trait of being independent. Okonkwo prefers to work rather than sit around. A quote that supports this statement is “But he was always uncomfortable sitting around for days waiting for a feast or getting over it. He would be much happier on the farm" (39). This proves Okonkwo isn't social and he doesn't like to depend on anyone. He's not bashful and he is hard working. Another trait of Okonkwo's is being strict. Okonkwo doesn't put up with anything from his wives or kids. Achebe writes, "without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping” (40). This quote proves that Okonkwo is strict and had no mercy with his second wife at that moment. Chapter 5 revealed traits people wouldn't think Okonkwo has, but people aren't always what or who others think they are.

Teaching is Lucy's passion! As a veteran educator with more than twenty years experience, she prides herself on making learning accessible to all her students regardless of their ability level.

She works one-on-one with her students during the course to grow their skills and ability.

Additionally, she provides scaffolds for students who need it and enrichment for others. Lucy is a believer in sequencing learning experiences for students and providing meaningful, timely feedback.

Recently, Lucy has noticed the feedback she provides to students doesn't seem to be helping them or they aren't looking at the feedback as they revise their work.

As a lifelong learner, Lucy does some research about feedback and how to better provide it to students for their improvement. Lucy comes across the term wise feedback during her search and begins to read about it. She sees how providing wise feedback is a shift in language and intent from the feedback she normally provides her students.

Could it really be that simple? Join Lucy throughout the PLM as she delves deeper into what wise feedback is and how it can help her students.
