To apply for income assistance (welfare) in British Columbia, you will primarily work through the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. The process is designed to be done online, but there are options if you don't have internet access.
There are three ways to start your application:
Online (Fastest): Use the My Self Serve (MySS) portal. You will need to create a Basic BCeID and a 4-digit PIN to sign your documents electronically.
By Phone: Call the Ministry toll-free at 1-866-866-0800. Select the option for "Applying for Assistance."
In Person: Visit a local Ministry office or Service BC location. You can use their public computers to apply, or speak with a worker if you have an urgent need (e.g., you are fleeing abuse or have no food).
Before you start, gather these details for yourself and your spouse/partner (if applicable):
Identification: Social Insurance Number (SIN), BC Services Card, or birth certificate.
Financial Info: Recent bank statements, your current balance, and any assets you own (like a vehicle).
Housing Info: Your monthly rent or mortgage cost and utility expenses.
Income: Details on any money coming in, including EI, WCB, or pension payments.
In most cases, if you are considered "employable," you must complete a three-week work search before your application is finalized.
You will be asked to keep a record of the jobs you applied for.
Exceptions: You may be exempt from this search if you have a disability, are over 65, are fleeing an abusive situation, or have an immediate medical crisis.
Monthly payments vary based on your family size. As of early 2026, the maximum monthly support and shelter rates are approximately:
Family Unit
Max Monthly Rate
Single Person
~$1,060
Single Parent (1 child)
~$1,405
Couple (no children)
~$1,650
Couple (1 child)
~$1,845

Asset Limits: You are generally allowed to have up to $5,000 in assets as a single person (excluding your primary home and one vehicle) while remaining eligible.
Check Eligibility: You can use the Online Eligibility Estimator without fully committing to an application.
Emergency Assistance: If you need food or shelter today, call the number above or go to an office immediately; they can often fast-track "Hardship Assistance."
