Since I am creating a cover song for my FMP I have done some research on what makes a good cover song as well as what they mean to me.
The definition of a cover song is where a band or individual will make their own version of an already existing song. The core elements of the original song remain such as Lyrics, melody etc. but the artist/an will usually add their own subtle or unsubtle flair to the song. Below are a few of my favourite examples of covers similar in the style I am aiming for.
For my FMP, I am creating a cover of Spiritual Cramp by Christian Death, a Post Punk/Deathrock track from 1982. I want to add my own subtle flairs to the song that will make it ore in line with my personal style such as creating a more "emo" sound to the song through downtuned guitars and a faster tempo as well as more melancholy vocals.
Wicked game by HIM is a cover of Chris Isaak's most popular track of the same name. Unlike the original, HIM put a more metal/gothic twist on the song, replacing the acoustic guitar with lead and Rhythm electrics. with Ville Valo's deep voice giving the song a more romantic gothic style.
The Passenger by Siouxie and the Banshees is a cover of Iggy Pop's most popular track. The Passenger was covered in Siouxsie and the Banshees' iconic post punk style with Siouxsie's vocals in my opinion, being a lot better than the original.
