While this idea was the most appealing to me, I believe I would face too many obstacles such as lacking most of the skills necessary as well as a band to perform it with. This idea is still on the table though. My initial idea for making an EP is to have it all be atmospheric drum and bass or related genres.
This idea came originally as creating a magazine or a newspaper however I feel as if a video essay would be much more fitting for both what I am going to discuss and the day and age we live in.
This is the idea I will most likely be following through with as it gives me the opportunity to play and cover the songs I like most in front of an audience live and online.
This is a mind map I created to visually lay out what ideas I had in my head, most of these seemed either too ambitious or unappealing to me so I have selected 3 that interested me the most.
This idea is still on the table as something to create passively alongside my FMP as a side/passion project. I believe that the vision I have for this idea is easy to achieve with my skills and can be completed in a realistic timeframe. My main inspiration would be some of Sewerslvt/Cynthoni's newer tracks released after 2020. These tracks are mostly composed of samples and digitally created acid beats/synths with a 120-190BPM amen break on top of it all. The track attached is my most listened to and my main source of inspiration from her 2020 album Draining Love Story. I could have listed the entire album because all of the tracks on it are special in their own way however for an EP/Single that I would create, most of the inspiration would come from this one song alone. On top of that, I am also drawing inspiration form her other genres as well such as her Acid House track Cyberia lyr2 or her hardstyle tracks like Blissful overdose and Looming.Sorrow.Descent or even Cyberia Lyr3 which is a mix of all the genres listed. While this sort of music isn't appealing to a wide audience (thanks to the intense drums and particular samples) I do feel as if Sewerslvt/Cynthoni's work on Ambient DnB, Hardstyle and Acid house are some of the best examples of the genre.
This Idea came from a few months ago when I was ill and spent the entire week watching video Essays on my favorite bands. One that stood out to me was a person documenting the history of Type O Negative, a gothic/doom metal band from new york. The format of the video was coherent, easy to follow and very informative and served as a source of inspiration for this idea.
This was the idea I chose over everything, I felt as if doing covers was perfect for me as it allows me to play a song I like with the people I like without restricting my creative liberties too much. I chose two of my most listened to songs at the time, Spiritual Cramp by Christian Death and Vital Signs by Picture me Broken.
The song Spiritual Cramp by the popular deathrock ban Christian Death, was a pioneer in its genre, setting a new standard for Deathrock and Post-Punk alike. The song Debuted with their first album Only Theatre of Pain in March 1982. The song itself is a critique of modern christianity and how it has lost all meaning and is used simply as a scapegoat for people to get away with hate. As for its sound, It is very reminiscent of the post-punk/Goth rock songs that came before it, for me personally, its sound is completely unique. The 4 or 5 guitar effects mixed with completely raw bass as well as having the vocals be part of the background noise rather than being the main focus of the song, which has since become a defining feature of the Deathrock sound.
To replicate their sound, My friend has a Helix guitar pedal which he will use for creating their unique sound. whereas I will be playing my bass through an amp and record the audio on a camera to capture the low quality gritty effect I want.
I have decided to place all of my focus in the first cover I am doing in order to create the best possible product before the deadline. If there is enough spare time after all of my research, Production etc is finished I will work on the second cover however it is not s priority.
The cover will be of Picture me Broken's song Vital signs. Released in July 2010 along with the rest of the album Wide Awake. While not setting a new standard or pioneering the emo scene, they did create great music and their music absolutely deserves more recognition. Their sound is very typical of Emo bands from the early 2000s with standard tunes guitars, screaming vocals and barely audible bass. This is one of the biggest issues I have with creating the covers, not only is the bass line and guitar tab tricky, the Screaming vocals are something I don't think I would be able to replicate.
Recording Vocals will be the final step in the recording phase for my track, with drum production coming first. For recording vocals I will need a condenser microphone, somewhere quiet and soundproof to record and I will need to rehearse and practice my vocal skills or at least find somebody to help me. Equipment Wise, I am going to need a Condenser Microphone as well as an appropriate space to record such as a recording studio or at least somewhere with good acoustics.
For the drum track, me and my friend used the stock Punk rock drum template and tweaked it to our liking, such as swapping different sounds as well as altering the BPM to that of our song. We also used a separate drum track to create the tambourine sound that plays at the start pf the original song. As a more personal touch to the final product, I will be sampling an Amen break into the song somewhere.
We recorded our bass and guitar on Thursday 03/4 as well as our initial prototype of our cover. We used my friend's Helix pedal to change and use many effects to capture the sound we were aiming for. We weren't able to fins the correct bpm/tempo at first but we eventually found a midi pack that helped us get the correct BPM and timing. Recording will be done using an Audiobox USB96 Audio Interface (shown left).
