Students will explore the concept of self-expression by creating a pinch pot monster, considering how personal choices in form, texture, and decoration reflect their unique personality and style.
Research ceramic pinch pot monsters on Google, Pinterest, or any other search engine. Collect three visual examples (pictures) of pinch pot monsters. Upload the images to your process page. Below the pictures, add a link to where you found the image, and explain what you like about each example below the link. Be descriptive; no vague comments like It's cute, or I like it because it is blue.
Fill out your Pinch Pot Monster development page. In your development section, upload a picture of your design page to your process page. Below the picture, explain your design on your process page.
Step 1: Wedge one pound of clay. Take a quarter of the clay and set it aside in your Ziploc bag.
Step 2: Take your 3/4 pound of clay and make it into a sphere.
Step 3: Push your thumb into the middle of the sphere.
Step 4: Pinch the clay with your thumb and forefinger, starting at the bottom and turning as you go.
Step 5: Stop pinching when the pot is wide enough.
Step 6: Smooth with fingertips and a damp sponge. Make sure the walls are 1/4" thick.
Step 7: Shape the mouth of your monster.
Step 8: Make your monster features with your reserved clay.
Step 9: Slip and score your monster features.
Step 10: Smooth your connections. Add texture and underglaze. Place your greenware on the bisque fire shelves.
Upload a picture of your art piece before it is glazed and add it to your process page. Explain how your process went on your process page.
Step 11: Rinse your bisque ware. Touch up your underglaze if you need to. Apply two coats of clear glaze if you used underglaze, and place your pinch pot monster on the glaze fire shelves.
Take a picture of your finished pinch pot monster using the photo studio tent. Upload your image to your process page and answer the questions below with 3-4 sentences on your process page.
