Ms. Moniques Talk (4/18/23)
Some things I learned about marketing are word of mouth goes a long way, you don't have to pay for ads to get good publicity and starting of small can get you to bigger things. When they started their food truck, social media wasn't a big thing. Although, talking to your family and friends about the newest things was. She said that they never had to pay for ads because people would just do it for them. Lastly, Ms. Mo said that when they started their food truck they had two things on their menu and then they added burgers. After that, they kept running specials and if the customers liked it, the would put it on the menu. Eventually, they had too much business for a little food truck so they opened up a restaurant.
I think their story is amazing, how they were just two best friends in culinary school who didn't know what to do, now they're running one of the biggest local owned restaurants. Everyone told them they couldn't do it but they did it and they're still going at it. They struggled a lot along the way but they never gave up because it wasn't a job for them. She talked about how there were times where they had no money but still continued to try because they had hope. I think that running a business takes a lot of perseverance, like they had.
Dr. B's Youtube Videos
In the first video Dr. B said "READ, READ, READ" and this shows how crucial reading was and is to him. He says that reading is where he got his wisdom. It's how he gained his knowledge and began thinking more critically. He says to learn how to reject rejection and I think that's basically saying to not care about other people's opinions. He says to read books with true meaning, books about people who had it worse. To read memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies. He says that you cannot educate people on adversity until you've read books on true adversity.
In his second video he talks about how society treats people based on the color of their skin. He says that he shouldn't have to be treated that way because that's the way God made him. My two favorite phrases he said were " God does not create junk" and " we don't lack intelligence; we lack words and in order to gain words we must read." When you listen to him speak you realize how truly intelligent, wise and inspirational he is. It's hard to not be amazed by his words.
Public speaking isn't easy. For some people it came make them shaky, it can make some turn red and it can make some just completely freeze. For the guy in this video his fear started with his kindergarten teacher putting him on the spot. The tips he gave are what he followed to overcome his fear. He also talked about how when you talk fast, people get excited. When you talk slow, you grab attention.

Reaction to Ms. Oliveros' Presentation
Ms. O had a very enlightening presentation for me and my classmates earlier today. I never realized how many options I had after high school although she has discussed it many times. Now that I’m so close to that point I’m paying closer attention to the choices I have. It is a very nerve-wracking time for us as seniors and not knowing how we’re going to afford college. I think now we’re finally realizing how much is offered and how it’s been in front of us the whole time.
Although I’m not going to college straight away, it’s still nice to know what I could’ve had and the path I could’ve taken. She's always been very helpful with letting us know about things like this and I’m very thankful. I was surprised about the CLYMER program because nobody ever talked about that before. She made me look forward to my college years and told me all the ways to make it easier for me. I'm thankful she was able to take the time out of her day to speak with us.
Reaction to Mr. Betances' Discussion
Dr. B gave us a very eye opening and wonderful presentation yesterday. I was very surprised when he first started talking because his voice held so much power and initiative. Two qualities of leadership. He took the attention of me and my fellow classmates right away. What stood out to me was when he said, “Students don’t quit school, they quit their teachers.” that caught my attention right away because of how true that statement is. Students often quit school because they feel their teachers aren’t teaching them right.
At first, I was a bit nervous because of how much confidence he had in himself. Every word he said held my attention to the point that I wanted to know more and more as he kept going. Another thing that he had mentioned was when he said, "you can’t be a leader and make peace with others until you had made peace with yourself." I think that is a powerful statement because you can’t be a leader if you don’t believe that you can lead. I had learned so much from him in that short period of time and for that I'm grateful.
By Jerry Roberts
Jerry Roberts talked about what happens when the leader suddenly isn't there anymore. How a company is left in complete chaos but sometimes it can be a good thing. It gives the unheard a voice, it gives people a chance to restart and it gives everyone some perspective. One of the bad effects it could have is that the company could be doubtful. Lets say the leader is terminated, everyone else could be worried about losing their jobs. If the leader died, the company would suffer a great loss.
What I learned from this article is that nothing and nobody is permanent. You could depend on somebody to lead the way for you but it won't always stick. You have to lead your own path because your leader won't be there forever. I also learned that you need to always have a backup plan so if your leader does suddenly leave you're not stuck in chaos. Be a leader in your own story so when it's just you, you'll get through it.
