Module 3:

Note Taking

Why is taking notes so hard?

For so many of us taking notes is difficult because we don't want to miss something important--- and it can feel overwhelming to figure out what is important. Foremost, remember your research question. This is your focus-- and your notes should connect to that question in some way. Whether it is background, a direct answer to the question, or even anticipation of the opposition, it's all connected to that important question. Next: Keep it brief.

Quoting, Paraphrasing & Summarizing

These three techniques will be your best friends when you want to incorporate other writers' ideas into your text, but make sure you're not plagiarizing anything.

Careful note-taking is a great way to avoid plagiarism

The video will show you one style of note-taking that can help you carefully organize your ideas. However, that is not the only way to do it. Find what works best for you - but always remember to write down where those notes are coming from!

Methods for note taking

There are many ways people take notes. However, three common methodologies include outlining, Cornell notes, and sketch or aesthetic notes. If your teacher doesn't require a specific kind of notes, you need to find the best style of notes for you. This will help to keep you engaged with the material and focused on what matters. Many of us think of taking notes as a chore; however, when you find the style that is right for you, you will find that you are working less to learn more. Check out the three different styles in the image carousel to the right-- and the links below each image to learn even more.
