Is a position at West Davis Veterinary Center right for you?

West Davis Veterinary Center opened in 2017 and is owned by local veterinarians that also work in the practice.  Our management team seeks to serve the needs of staff and clients with a focus on excellence and healthy communication.

People working at South and West Davis Veterinary Centers have a busy work day in general practice. We do not keep ill patients overnight or plan to work far into the evening.

So, are we spending most of our days doing routine spays and neuters?  That is part of our day, but we also…

Manage ill patients during the day. We have a full lab and in hospital digital radiology and ultrasound so we can collect and act on diagnostics

Prioritize preventative dentistry and welcome difficult extractions. Our routine cleanings are always done under general anesthesia with digital dental radiographs and full anesthetic monitoring. As a technician, you will never be alone in dentistry to monitor your own patient.

Practice with fear reducing techniques. If you have worked in a hospital that required forceful strong pet restraint, then know that is not how we handle our patients.

Use digital medical records and electronic communication. We are an AAHA accredited hospital and maintain excellent computerized medical records. We use Idexx Cornerstone for our practice management software. Computer literacy and communication is highly appreciated.

Teamwork takes effort and we work on this.

Talk with our clients often. We call them back after procedures and expect to check up on them after visits. Technicians are expected to help the receptionists answer phone calls as our clients appreciate access to knowledgeable staff that know their pets.

Coordinate with outside specialists to see our patients at our hospital where they can have specialized care, such as a cardiac or abdominal ultrasound with a radiologist, orthopedic or other specialized surgery, or endoscopic biopsies with an internist.

Facilitate visits to outside specialty practices for patients that are too critical for day practice. While many of us have worked at ERs and understand critical care, we are not a 24 hour facility. So, we keep friendly relations with outside hospitals that help our patients too.

Manage our day by leaving appointments open for urgent care. We do not accept every pet that calls up for a drop off appointment. We want to have the capacity to handle the patients that are in the hospital and make an effort not to overbook the schedule.

Appreciate people that communicate well with coworkers and clients and who have an interest in learning and accepting change. Veterinary medicine is an evolving profession and we like to learn new things and talk about our patients collaboratively. Continuing education is required as part of every position.

We also tend to order a group boba tea on Tuesdays and wear pink on Wednesdays, but participation in these things is voluntary!

We have three support staff positions at WDVC:

Veterinary Receptionist

All people master this position because we expect the entire staff to be cross trained and this is the minimum requirement. A great veterinary receptionist is kind and understanding, listening to client concerns. They can think outside the box and collaborate with the client to deliver excellent patient care. The ideal candidate has a minimum of 1 year reception experience.

Veterinary Assistant

This position includes all the skills that would be required of a veterinary receptionist and an unlicensed veterinary assistant, including outpatient treatments, diagnostics, and pharmacy needs.  The  ideal candidate has a minimum of 1 year veterinary clinical experience.

Registered Veterinary Technician

Our hospital utilizes the RVT position as defined by the California Veterinary Practice Act and encourages our RVT’s to utilize the skills commensurate with licensure.  If your prior RVT experiences did not include bandaging, RVT allowable dentistry, or suturing and anesthetic induction, we are happy to train you in these areas.  We also encourage CE and pay for your VetGirl membership as well as continuing education courses. Our RVTs do not graduate out of helping clients on the phone and in person because we want our clients to have contact with our highly knowledgeable staff. Currently, we have 7 RVTs employed at WDVC, and are actively encouraging two veterinary assistants to pass the VTNE.

Benefits

Full time employees will qualify for health care and Safe Harbor 401K retirement benefits, professional licensure fees and continuing education costs, and sick leave and vacation pay.
