Reading a text is a semiotic act: the reader gains meaning from that text. Given that semiosis is an interpretive act, as we have seen, reading is a succession of interpretations and reinterpretations in the light of what the text says about itself (intratextual links), of what the text says of the world (extratextual links), of what the text says about other texts (intertextual links). Every time the reader finds a new sign before her, she has to undertake a process of decision-making, often forcing her to predominantly trust one sense to the detriment of other senses, which then determines a chain of consequences for the interpretation of the signs that follow, and on the interpretation of the whole of the text.
La lectura es un acto semiótico: el lector extrae significado del texto. Dado que, como ya vimos, la semiosis es un acto interpretativo, la lectura es una sucesión de interpretaciones y reinterpretaciones a la luz de lo que el texto dice de sí (vínculos intratextuales), de lo que el texto dice del mundo (vínculos extratextuales), y de lo que el texto dice de otros textos (vínculos intertextuales). Cada vez que el lector encuentra un nuevo signo ante sí, debe enfrentarse a un proceso de decisión, que suele forzarlo a confiar mayormente en un sentido en detrimento de otros, lo cual determina una cadena de consecuencias en la interpretación de los signos que siguen y en la interpretación del texto en su conjunto.
In this view, reading is a process having something in common with games of skill or of strategy that have a set of rules that do not impose a predetermined behavior on the player, leaving room for individual creativity and ability2. Another common feature shared by reading and games of strategy is the fact that, in both activities, the final result in unknown, which creates an atmosphere of anticipation that makes the path leading to the end seductive.
En este sentido, la lectura es un proceso que tiene algo en común con los juegos de habilidad o estrategia, que cuentan con un conjunto de reglas pero que no imponen un comportamiento determinado al jugador, dejando espacio a la creatividad y habilidad individuales2. Otra característica común de la lectura y los juegos de estrategia es que, en ambas actividades, el resultado final se desconoce, lo cual crea una atmósfera de expectativa que hace interesante el recorrido hacia el final.
In a game like chess, the moves are not random, the decisions are made s ystematically, although personal preferences remain a component of their selection. As a consequence, even within the framework of a very firm decision making activity, there is (semiotic) space for risk taking, for bet placing, for creative inference
because the understanding and use of signs is never a matter of recognition of a stable equivalence, but always a matter of guessing, or creative inferring3.
En un juego como el ajedrez, los movimientos no son arbitrarios y las decisiones se toman de manera sistemática, si bien las preferencias personales siguen influyendo en la decisión. Como consecuencia, incluso en el contexto de una actividad de toma de decisiones muy rigurosa, existe un espacio (semiótico) para el riesgo, la apuesta y la conjetura creativa
porque la comprensión y el uso de los signos no es nunca una cuestión de reconocimiento de una equivalencia estable, sino siempre de suposición, de inferencia creativa3.
Reading proceeds step by step, one choice after another, and adjustments are made at pace that permits the reader to follow along, for example, the presence of an intertextual link, which makes her suspect that other passages of the text already read were supposed to be related to that same link as well.
La lectura es un proceso que se realiza paso a paso, decisión tras decisión, y se introducen ajustes a un ritmo que permite al lector advertir, por ejemplo, la presencia de un vínculo intertextual, que le hace sospechar que pasajes anteriores ya leídos estarían también relacionados con dicho vínculo.
Or, more simply, the reader notices the recurrence of a word or expression which, in a given passage of the book, explicitly manifests a certain gravity and a precise meaning, while until that point it was enveloped in the thickest interpretive mystery. The reader now has to backtrack - with her mind or her body - to all the previous occurrences of that word or expression in order to check the effect of their co-textualization with the benefit of hindsight, i.e. in the light of the interpretation that was only possible to arrive at after the "illumination".
Dicho de manera más sencilla, el lector se percata de la recurrencia de una palabra o expresión que, en un pasaje determinado del libro, manifiesta de manera explícita una cierta importancia y un sentido preciso, que hasta ese momento estaban envueltos en el más denso misterio interpretativo. En este punto el lector debe retroceder -con su mente o su cuerpo- a todos los casos anteriores en que aparece dicha palabra o expresión con el fin de verificar el efecto de su cotextualización, valiéndose ahora de la luz de la interpretación a la que sólo pudo llegarse tras el momento de "iluminación".
At the end of a reading, the interpretive path arrives at a result/conclusion. Even the (temporary) result is related to the whole of the reader's knowledge. Every reading exerts an influence on the reader's worldview, but in the meantime the reader's worldview exerts an influence on the results of her reading that she may consider unsatisfying, which can induce her to begin the reading/game a new.
Al final de la lectura, el recorrido interpretativo culmina en un resultado/conclusión. Sin embargo, el resultado (provisional) está relacionado con el conjunto de conocimientos del lector. Cada lectura ejerce una influencia en la cosmovisión del lector, pero al mismo tiempo dicha cosmovisión ejerce una influencia en el resultado de la lectura, que el lector puede considerar insatisfactoria y, por lo tanto, moverle a repetir la lectura/juego.
According to Peirce, a rule is an interpretive habit based on a conscious resolution the interpreter makes to act in a certain way4. Reading can be conceived as a language game for one player - the reader - who, by trial and error, confronts a succession of interpretive hypotheses. When the hypotheses are accepted, she goes on, while when she finds flaws in them, she goes back and starts again.
Según Peirce, la regla es un hábito interpretativo basado en la resolución consciente que impulsa al intérprete a actuar de determinada manera4. La lectura puede entenderse como un juego lingüístico con un solo participante, el lector, quien mediante prueba y error afronta una serie de hipótesis interpretativas. Si las acepta, sigue adelante; si las encuentra erróneas, retrocede y vuelve a empezar.
Decisions regarding single lexical problems (semantic field of a word, activation or suppression of senses, "narcosis" of meanings and emphasis on other meanings) intertwine with the decisions regarding global problems of textual interpretation. The inferential movement, besides proceeding from one word to the next, from one sentence to the next, endlessly oscillates from micro-interpretation to macro-interpretation. The overall interpretation of the text is compared to the interpretation of its single fragments because textual coherence demands a correspondence between the two levels.
Las decisiones referentes a problemas léxicos aislados (el campo semántico de una palabra, la activación o supresión de acepciones, la "narcosis" de significados y énfasis de otros significados) interactúan con las decisiones referidas a problemas globales de interpretación del texto. El movimiento inferencial, además de pasar de una palabra a la siguiente, de una frase a otra, oscila de manera continua entre la microinterpretación y la macrointerpretación. La interpretación general del texto se compara a la interpretación de sus fragmentos aislados, porque la cohesión textual exige una correspondencia entre los dos niveles.
While the rules of the game are fixed, the strategies to play it are dynamic. Reading, meant as a game, consists also in continually challenging the interpretive rules in the light of the new findings. The hermeneutic circle in which the reader makes inferences on the text and checks them against the ongoing text describes what Eco defines "unlimited semiosis".
Aunque las reglas del juego son fijas, las estrategias de juego son dinámicas. La lectura, entendida como juego, es también un reto continuo a las reglas interpretativas a la luz de los nuevos hallazgos que se van produciendo. This is not the place to enter into details on the consequences interlingual translation has on the hermeneutic circle, but we can sense by intuition that the translator is in a very delicate situation: her interpretation blocks some interpretive possibilities, opens others that were unforeseen by the prototext author, and sets interpretations that, the author intended to have temporary and dynamic. If reading can be compared to a never-ending and always open game, the reading of a translated text is also a game, played with other rules and on another text. If it is explicitly a translated text, the reader knows that someone has played the game for her and is telling her something about the game.
No es éste el lugar para profundizar en detalles sobre las consecuencias que tiene la traducción interlingüística en el círculo hermenéutico, pero podemos percibir de manera intuitiva que el traductor se encuentra en una posición muy delicada: su interpretación bloquea algunas posibilidades interpretativas, abre otras no previstas por el autor del prototexto y fija interpretaciones que el autor quería que fuesen provisionales y dinámicas. Si la lectura puede compararse a un juego interminable y siempre abierto, la lectura de un texto traducido es también un juego, que se juega con otras reglas y con otro texto. Si se trata de un texto manifiestamente traducido, el lector sabe que alguien ha jugado la partida por él y que la está relatando.
