Health
Students will understand the meaning of this pillar to then engage their character strengths within it in their lives.
Học sinh sẽ hiểu được ý nghĩa của trụ cột này để sau đó gắn kết những điểm mạnh tính cách vào trong cuộc sống của mình.
Health (H) refers to establishing habits that support positive physical and psychological health (Norrish, Robinson & Williams 2013). Health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (WHO 2018a). Research asserts that students who thrive physically and psychologically also perform well in their studies (WHO 2011). In addition, developing healthy behaviours in adolescence can carry benefits into later life, which reduces the risk of adverse health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease (Norrish, Robinson & Williams 2013).
Health may be defined as the ability to adapt and manage physical, mental and social challenges throughout life:
Physical – physical and physiological health in the body and its systems
Emotional – the presence of positive emotions and the ability to manage emotions
Social – the presence of warm, trusting relationships and the capacity to interact with others
Psychological – ability to handle challenges and (to have) feelings of confidence for the future (Keyes 2002, 2005).¹

For our purposes we are going to focus on physical and psychological health. You already are learning about emotional and social health by studying the character strengths of emotional and social intelligences.
The Definition of Health: Work with your partner to better understand each of the descriptions of health at the top of this web page. Together write down your definition of health. Goal> To make meaning of the term "health."
Physical Health in Your Life: We will approach learning about physical health by having you and your partner do some research together. Complete the following tasks.
Create a shared Google Document.
Search the internet using "healthy living, physical health, good or healthy diet... exercise...sleep hygiene...healthy habits...healthy teenagers". Find websites that are valid in that they are from health organizations, known health websites, and science-supported YouTube channels. No blogs, no TikTok, no sites filled with advertisements. You are looking for information that teaches you about how to be physically healthy.
Each partner pulls information from different resources. Don't work from the same websites or video channels. Record your findings in the shared Google Document.
Write each of your categories at the bottom of your document. Once you complete the task, review your work to see if there are any patterns in any way that you can group information into categories. Examples are sleep and diet.
Cut and paste information under each of the category titles that you just listed to organize your research.
Work together to review all the "chunks" of information. Now make a list in your own words of what good physical health looks like and what practices/activities support it.
Goal> To create a list of categories and supporting information about what makes up good physical health.
3. Vietnamese versus Western Diets: You probably hear from time to time about which Vietnamese foods to eat for good health and which ones to eat when you are sick. Do a whole class discussion to share what you know about what makes a lot of Vietnamese food healthy. The second task is to share what you know about western food (examples - pizza, hamburgers, cake, ice cream, processed food, etc.). Now compare and contrast Vietnamese and western foods. Goal> To understand generally how much healthier the Vietnamese diet is compared to a western one.
4. Psychological Health: Review the definition from above... "ability to handle challenges and (to have) feelings of confidence for the future." Our wellness program aims to help you thrive and prepare you for adult life. Adult life will, of course, have many challenges! When challenges arise, you can engage the strengths that will help you with confidence and handle the struggles that confront you. Task> Work with your partner to list possible challenges you will face in your twenties. Then come up with character strengths within the PERMAH pillars that you can engage to handle those challenges. Once you complete our wellness program, you will have a wellness plan that has you consistently exercising the character strengths within each of the PERMAH pillars.
Goal> To understand that you will be able to use the character strengths and PERMAH pillars to thrive and handle the challenges of adulthood.
