Wabeno Elementary Artist of the Week Awards start in the middle of September, so all of Mrs. Kanak's classes have a chance to meet with her and make awesome stuff in the art room.
Elementary Artist of the Week is open to all students in grades Kindergarten through 5th.

(ALWAYS...updating...😁)
SEPTEMBER: Selena
Kindergarten has been learning about LINES and COLORS in the art room. We practiced drawing 6 different kinds of lines, using ink daubers, and using watercolor paints!
SEPTEMBER: Lovely
4th Grade created these SEA LIFE BOWLS in the art room. We created SLUMP MOLD bowls and then decorated them with different ocean creatures and scenes. Amazing work!

Third Grade studied the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We explored creating compositions with shapes, patterns, and lines using Sharpies. To finish the pieces, we used Oil Pastels to blend and color in our line drawings.
OCTOBER: Kallie
Second Grade created these MING DYNASTY-INSPIRED vase drawings. We looked at lots of examples of pottery, designed our vase decorations, and then placed them on tables to show overlapping with decorations, flowers, and more!

Wabeno Elementary Artists of the Week
November - December
(ALWAYS...updating...😁)
NOVEMBER: Easton
Students looked carefully at Rube Goldberg machines and simple machines. This lesson tied in science, technology, and engineering (STEAM). Students drew simple machines in an 8-step sequence that completed a task that could happen in their brain or body.
NOVEMBER: Beau
Students worked with crayons, oil pastels, and tempera paint sticks (Kwik Stix) to create a drawing. Students learned about SPACE in art, including overlapping, distance, and how space and size work together in their art. Students created a COMPOSITION and included different sizes and shapes of pumpkins while using multiple art tools experimentally.
NOVEMBER: Kierra
Students learned about the contemporary artist Lourdes Villagomez and created art in her style in mixed media. Students use stencils/templates to create skull shapes. Students then accessorize and decorate the skull with features, using echo lines, and crystallization details (geometric shapes).
DECEMBER: Arya
Students in 2nd Grade classes created these fish out of clay! Students first created a pinch pot to make the body of their fish, and then reviewed SLIP AND SCORE construction to attach awesome and amazing details to their ceramic (clay) fish. Students could add fins, tails, eyes, teeth, tongues, and other fishy details to their artworks. Finally, students were able to use low fire glazes to decorate their pieces and bring their fish sculptures to life.
DECEMBER: Willow
Students in 3rd Grade classes created these fish bowls out of clay! Students used a paper template to trace the shape of the fishbowl into their clay, and then reviewed SLIP AND SCORE construction to attach awesome and amazing details to their ceramic (clay) fishbowls. Finally, students were able to use low fire glazes to decorate their artworks and bring their fish bowls to life.
DECEMBER: Bob
Students made pinch pots for a sculpture of a penguin to stand in. Students practiced creating a pinch pot with specific thickness, wall quality, and textures. Students then used scrap clay to construct a penguin. Students learned/reviewed Slip and Score process to attach their penguins to their pinch pot "pools" before firing and glazing. Finally, Mrs. Kanak added glass stones to the bowls to simulate the look of ice in the pool.
Wabeno Elementary Artists of the Week
January - February
(ALWAYS...updating...😁)
JANUARY: Krew
Students drew animals that are normally found in burrows in the wintertime. Students restrained their drawing to a circle shape and used other 'round' elements (round burrow, round apples/berries) to create UNITY in their artwork. Students did drawings, colored, and used tempera paints to complete these projects.
JANUARY: Remy
Students created a mixed media project featuring birds in a wintery scene. Students painted paper to create different patterns and effects. Students cut out birds from the painted paper and developed a background using different tools to create a wintery scene. Students combined all of their elements into a collage.
JANUARY: Audrey
Students learned the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue, and must mix those three colors together ONLY to make a 6-color rainbow! After painting their rainbow, students review SHAPES and make a wonderful and active self-portrait of their body in motion. Students then combine these two artworks together into one MEGA ARTWORK and collage their drawing onto their painting!
FEBRUARY: Finnigan (Finn)
Students read along with the book "Beautiful Oops!" and learn about embracing the unknowns when it comes to creating art. Students make a painted background using nonconventional painting tools and then follow along to complete a self portrait. Students learn about facial features and how to measure the proportions of their faces to make their portrait realistic. Students also have access to mirrors for reference and to look at while drawing themselves. Finally, students color in their portraits, cut out shadows, and glue the portraits and shadows to their painted "oops" background.
FEBRUARY: Colton
Students created a mixed media project of a mug of hot cocoa on a decorated background. Students used optical illusion tricks and manipulated the viewer's eye to create a 3D mug for their collage artwork. Students will use paints correctly and neatly to meet their artistic goals. Students will talk about shape, form, shadow, highlight, and space in their artwork.
FEBRUARY: Delilah
Students learned about the contemporary artist Jen Aranyi and created the background painting for an artwork in her style. Students worked with watercolors and added details to the foreground of their artworks. Adding blackwork and line textures with Sharpies and pens. Students could finish their paintings and/or bookmarks with ink and details.

Wabeno Elementary's Artist of the Year has been chosen, and our winner is.... Lovely Erickson!
Mrs. Kanak, the Adventuring Art Teacher, wanted to connect creative lessons as much as possible to her sights and discoveries in Antarctica. Third-grade students learned about Icebreaker ships with Mrs. Kanak and continued the learning with her subs in November while she sailed to the Southern Ocean. Students watched videos, asked insightful questions, and then began to sketch their icebreaker-class vessels. Every drawing was unique, and all students found success with this engaging and colorful lesson.
Lovely explored the use of color and blended colored pencils to create her portrait of an Icebreaker on the ocean. The Artist of the Week judge was impressed by her use of color and ability to capture the look of the sky behind the sailing ship. Finally, Wabeno's K-12 staff chose this piece of artwork from a lineup of 21 fabulous original masterpieces and decided Lovely's art deserved a frame and a place of honor in the school!
Congratulations, Lovely!
Your artwork will be professionally framed by Frame of Mind Gallery in Lakewood and will soon hang proudly on the wall next to the Elementary Office! Mrs. Kanak will be in touch to make sure you receive your award and homemade gift from the Wabeno Art Department in the fall. Mrs. Kanak is so eager to see what you will create this year in art.
