The Fundamental Concepts are listed separately for each of the arts – dance, drama, music, and visual arts. These concepts represent essential aspects of each of the arts subject areas. In Visual Art they consist of the Elements and Principles of Design.
In the Fundamental Concepts tables for each grade and strand, the requirements emphasized in the expectations for that grade and strand are listed under the appropriate element or principle. For example line or colour. As students progress through the curriculum (grades 1-8) from grade to grade, they extend and deepen their understanding of these fundamental concepts and learn to apply their understanding with increasing sophistication and independence. Students also continue to build on the technical artistic skills related to these concepts troughout the grades.
Students should learn about the concepts of the various arts through meaningful, creative, hands on making and doing activities

The Elements of Design:
The basic elements used by artists when creating art, they are what one uses to create any work of art - 2D, 3D, or digital. The Elements of design are part of the Fundamental Concepts we teach students. In Ontario we address all the elements in ever grade on a continuum of learning.
