The Creative Process is the way ideas, art, or creative thinking comes about. Contrary to popular belief, this creative process does have structure. It always begins by gathering inspiration and ultimately culminates with the finished product. Sometimes we work through the full creative process, other times we focus in on a few key stages.
Providing opportunities for children to Explore and Experiment is critical.
Sometimes we create Process Based Art other times we create Product Based Art. Both have tremendous value for art-making with children and youth and really depend on intention to the learning. A balanced approach is key.
The Creative Process comprises several stages:
• challenging and inspiring
• imagining and generating
• planning and focusing
• exploring & experimenting
• producing preliminary work
• revising and refining
• presenting, performing, and sharing
• reflecting and evaluating
The creative process is intended to be followed in a flexible, fluid, and cyclical manner.
As students and teachers become increasingly familiar with the creative process, they are able to move deliberately and consciously between the stages and to vary their order as appropriate. For example, students may benefit from exploring and experimenting before planning and focusing; or in some instances, the process may begin with reflecting. Feedback and reflection can happen throughout the process.
What is Process Art?
Process Art is art that is child-directed, choice-driven, and celebrates the experience of discovery. In process art, the final product is always unique and the focus lies in the creation of the work, not necessarily the outcome. The term process art refers to where the process of its making art is not hidden but remains a prominent aspect of the completed work, so that a part or even the whole of its subject is the making of the work.
What is Product Based Art?
Product Based Art is art that can be adult initiated or child-directed - it supports choice, and encourages development of complete ideas into a final art product outcome. In product art, the final product works through the planned stages of the creative process and the focus lies in the creation of the work to a final outcome.
When people talk about process versus product...the debate is usually about the intention behind the art experience itself. When people explain the benefits of process art or product art, they are generally referring to how children make art. Both are tremendously valuable!
Process art’s goals relate to what happens during the art making sessions, while product art’s goals relate to the final outcome.
If you are like most art teachers, these question have a very passionate answer…YES! YES! YES! Every student has artistic potential and that art skills can undoubtedly be taught.
