Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction

When teaching in an online format, it is important to understand the benefits and limitations of different online methods. Two methods of online learning are synchronous and asynchronous experiences.

Asynchronous learning includes formats which are done without live interaction with the teacher. Students work on the assigned learning at the time of their choice. This is a benefit for families who need to support their child’s learning after their work day. It is also beneficial for students who can self-pace through content.

Synchronous learning includes real-time, live interaction with the teacher. Students are provided immediate feedback and support. This is a benefit for students who need live interaction with their teacher or may need additional support.

There is no one “right” method, as both methods of online learning have a place within online learning. The decisions teachers need to make are in regard to how much of each method is appropriate for the students in their classrooms.
