Cadavers for Student Practice Information:
Location
- Cadaver coffin drawers labelled “Cadavers for student practice”.
- Sometimes there are exceptions to this, but you will be contacted directly if there is a change in location.
- Please do not use any cadavers found in the walk-in cooler or in the large animal ward as they are likely being thawed for a lab.
- The anatomy lab is available outside of lab times as a space to practice with your cadavers. For your convenience, a monthly schedule is posted on the outside of the Anatomy Lab door.
- Cadavers for student practice must be contained in a Rubbermaid container to avoid contamination of the coffin drawers.
Cleaning/disinfection
- It is very important that all blood and debris is cleaned with prevail from the bottom of the coffin drawers, handles/doors, and floors.
- When finished with your cadaver, follow the table cleaning protocol posted on the stands at each group table.
- Ensure everything else is back where you found it, leaving the lab clean, and chairs pushed in.
- Any Rubbermaid’s, wheelbarrows, wire racks, etc. must be cleaned and disinfected with prevail once you are finished with them. The large animal ward can be used to clean the contaminated containers and leave them to dry.
Cadaver disposal
- Cadavers can be disposed of in the blue barrels found in the walk-in cooler.
- Using a permanent marker, write on the laminated waste transfer sheet that is found on top of the blue barrel, the type of cadavers being disposed of and how full the barrel is.
- Please ensure that the barrels are only ¾ full. When they reach ¾ full, extra barrels can be found in the large animal ward.
- When the cadaver is inside the barrel, ensure that the lid and the outside of the barrel is disinfected with Prevail before it is rolled back into the cooler.
Reminder
- The anatomy team works very hard to collect, organize and in some cases euthanize these cadavers. It is very important that all parts of the cadavers are used (and reused!) as much as possible. In some cases, parts of a cadaver may need to be collected for use in a different lab, hence you may notice some parts missing from the cadavers that you are provided for practice.
- Please remember that access to these cadavers is a privilege. We need your help with cleanup and disposal to be able to continue to offer you this privilege. If cleanup and disposal is not properly executed by students, we will no longer be able to provide you with this extra learning opportunity.
