Under the direct supervision of Diplomate(s) certified by the AiCVIM approved specialist(s), FASE (Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography), and senior staff veterinarians in respiratory & cardiovascular medicine.
Training will occur in teaching hospital, specialty center, and allied specialty network.
The PGY resident spends approximately 60% of the time on clinical service of small animal respiratory medicine and integrated cardiorespiratory care, 20% of the time on general internal medicine patient care, and 20% of the time on clinical research work.
The PGY resident is required to participate in all seminars, rounds, journal clubs, clinical courses, research meetings, scientific conferences, and other organized activities.
The PGY resident is required to conduct a research project during their training period. The supervisor provides mentoring for each PGY resident to complete the clinical research project. Presentation of a scientific abstract at an international conference is encouraged. One peer-reviewed manuscript of case report or original study is expected during the training period.
Teach final-year veterinary students on clinical rotations and instruct students in clinical skills are also a part of the training program. Teaching skills will be developed through daily work in the university teaching hospital.
Annual evaluation will be made for renewal based on satisfactory completion of the previous year. If indicated more frequent evaluations (eg., every 3-4 months) may be performed.
For AiCVIM Residency Training Program: The rigistration of the AiCVIM residency training program is starting in 2024. A resident must select and register for either the Internal Medicine track or the Cardiovascular Medicine track for her/his future AiCVIM Diplomate certification process. The process includes completing an AiCVIM approved residency training program, passing the general examination (such as ACVIM general exam), completing the publication requirement of the credentialing process, and passing the specialty examination (such as ACVIM specialty exam) in the specialty in which the candidate seeks certification.
The FASE application: The FASE credential is for echocardiographers with proven professional contributions, a diverse skill set, and knowledge of all aspects of echocardiography. This designation is achieved through a peer-reviewed process by ASE that requires comprehensive training and sustained contributions to research, education, service, and leadership in echocardiography. Due to the nature of these requirements, students, fellows, and residents are not eligible to apply for FASE. Therefore, the training program is designed to equip individuals with the qualifications and experience needed for future FASE applications. The requirements for applying for FASE should reference and adhere to ASE instructions (https://www.asecho.org/).
