Originally the Ripley and Gilson Quarries, the "Kitchen" Quarry is now one of the largest and most recognizable quarries at the West Rutland site; staggering in both length and height.
In 1843, William F. Barnes joined with William Y. Ripley to form a marble company. They were business partners until 1850. Barnes and Ripley built the Ripley Mill in Center Rutland, though they eventually divided their properties with Ripley taking the mill in Center Rutland and Barnes the quarries in West Rutland, though Barnes was subject to a contract to supply forever a specified number of cubic feet of marble which Ripley was to saw and sell to divide the proceeds. Ultimately, disputes about this agreement would result in the Supreme Court case Marble Co. v. Ripley in 1870.
Later, Ripley built an independent marble processing company named Ripley and Sons.
To read more about the Ripley family, see The Last of the Rutland Ripleys from 1989.
After some time, the "Ripley" and "Gilson" quarries were joined to become one continuous quarry as it exists today.
