In 1987, the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center was founded by B. Amore, a sculptor then based in Boston. The program was based at the Vermont Marble Co.'s Proctor headquarters and moved to West Rutland in 1989 at the invitation of the late Stanley Gawet who owned the property. The historic company store building was renovated to serve as the organization's office and main building, and the program expanded with support from the community.
Today, the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center owns that company store and the woodshop along with the old coping shop which serves as a metal shop, studio, and gallery space as well as several acres of property. Since the organization's inception, students and connoisseurs have traveled from across the globe to West Rutland to draw inspiration from the native marble and the creative spirit that lingers from the industry that thrived here.
