Over the past week, we made significant progress in planning our project proposal. We primarily created outlines for the various sections, such as the introduction, background, and methodology. We started the week by outlining the introduction which we simultaneously learned about in ID2050. In class we learned about breaking down an Introduction into 5 moves. Move 1 is the big picture the global problem, move 2 is the local big picture and how the global problem relates to our site, move 3 sets ups the scope, move 4 describes gaps in previous research, and finally move 5 details our specific project.
Next, we worked more on our background outline, building off of feedback gathered in last week’s PQP meeting with our advisors. We then compiled a list of facts and statistics to pepper throughout the background, and assigned them to each of the background sections for when we write it. In addition, we also drafted an introduction to the background section itself. Furthermore, we assigned different sections of the background to each of the group members. Sam will be handling the “Public Art in Venice Section,” Katherine the “Public Art Conservation Initiatives” section, Dimitri the “Restoration Practices” section, and Ben the “PreserVenice” section. For our ID2050 class, we also each created an annotated bibliography of sources related to our individual background sections.
After this came the outlining of the Methodology section which we did by making a small outline comprised of ‘ing’ action verbs about what we plan on completing while in Venice. Along with this outline we created our boundaries and scope. Spatial boundaries include the island of Venice, the area that has been canvased before, and Giudecca the new area that we will be looking at. Temporal boundaries include the time needed for data collection as well as weather and environmental factors such as flooding and bad weather. Lastly, conceptual boundaries and scope have to do with type of artifacts we will be focusing on.
Finally, we started to compile some pre-IQP deliverables, mostly focusing in on a plan of how to document Guidecca within our time in Venice. Guidecca itself divides nicely into seven rough “regions” with its inner divisions, and our hope is to document one region per week. The order in which we approach these is up in the air, but for now we will plan on a left-to-right approach when looking at a map of the island.
