This objective focuses on understanding ethical leadership and the importance of service. It encourages demonstrating integrity and ethical behavior in all aspects of life while striving to serve others and the community. Ethical leadership includes leading by example, inspiring others to follow suit, and making decisions that respect the dignity and rights of all individuals.
As part of the UWC Science Collective, I served as Head of Operations, a role that required coordinating communication, sharing information about mentorship opportunities, and supporting the selection process for students interested in pursuing careers in science.
One of my main responsibilities was to disseminate information about the mentorship program across the UWC network, ensuring that students from different UWC schools as well as from Atlantic College were aware of the opportunity. This involved organizing communication channels, responding to inquiries, and encouraging students to apply.
In addition to outreach, I was also involved in the selection process, reviewing applications from students across different UWC campuses and identifying candidates who could benefit most from mentorship in scientific fields. Working with applicants from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds made the process particularly complex, as it required balancing fairness, potential, and access to opportunity.
Selecting participants was not an easy task. Each application represented a student’s aspirations and personal story, which meant that decisions needed to be made thoughtfully and collaboratively. The role demanded responsibility, transparency, and ethical consideration in order to ensure that the program remained inclusive and aligned with the values of the UWC movement.

This experience showed me that leadership is not only about organizing tasks, but also about making fair and thoughtful decisions that impact others. As Head of Operations, I had to balance responsibility with ethical considerations, ensuring that the selection process was accessible and fair. Reviewing applications from across the UWC network reminded me of the diversity within the community and pushed me to value qualities beyond academics, such as motivation and potential. Making these decisions was challenging, as I was aware that they could influence someone’s future, which helped me understand leadership as a role that requires empathy, integrity, and accountability. This experience reflects ethical leadership by promoting fairness, collaboration, and equal access to opportunities. Personally, I developed stronger organizational and communication skills, as well as a deeper awareness of the responsibility behind leadership roles, while at a community level, the program supports students by connecting them with mentors and contributing to a more inclusive and supportive scientific network within UWC.
