Understanding and respect for diversity

The first objective, "Understanding and Respect for Diversity," focuses on fostering empathy, understanding, and appreciation for cultural, social, and personal differences. It encourages the ability to recognize and value diverse beliefs, experiences, and perspectives, using this diversity to make informed decisions and create meaningful connections. Additionally, it aims to bridge cultural and social gaps, promoting unity, social justice, and equity in all interactions. This objective emphasizes the importance of building a more inclusive world based on mutual respect and shared humanity.

STAR: The refugee CAS visits

Every Thursday, we participate in a space dedicated to supporting and connecting with refugees at a church that serves as a gathering point. Tables are organized with two students (from UWC Atlantic College or Cardiff University) and two refugees at each, fostering intimate and meaningful conversations. Each week, a central theme guides the discussions, allowing everyone to share their experiences and perspectives.

The refugees I’ve interacted with come mostly from Syria, Afghanistan, and parts of Africa. They have shared stories about the difficulties of adapting to a new place, mourning what they’ve left behind, and finding value in small everyday things. Our conversations often touch on complex topics such as family, dreams, and cultural traditions, making every interaction deeply insightful.

You can see that we have various activities to engage with while sitting at the table, creating a welcoming and interactive environment. On this particular occasion, the theme of our conversation was "Holidays." We had a set of guided questions on a sheet to help spark discussions, such as sharing favorite holiday memories, cultural traditions, or places we would like to visit. This structure made it easier for everyone to contribute, share personal experiences, and learn about each other's backgrounds, fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Reflection:

This experience has allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of cultural differences and the complex realities faced by displaced people. Listening to their stories has taught me to appreciate the simple things in life and to reflect on my own privileges and challenges as a Chilean immigrant and international student.

My ability to empathize with them is strengthened by my own experiences of adapting to a new country, enabling me to connect authentically and understand their emotions and struggles. Through these interactions, I have learned the importance of patience, active listening, and cultural sensitivity in building bridges and fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity.

How This Experience Meets the Objective

a) Recognizing and appreciating different values and experiences: The refugees’ stories have helped me better understand the realities of various cultures, from their traditions to the challenges of migration

b) Demonstrating empathy and understanding: Listening to their stories and responding with sensitivity has strengthened my ability to empathize with people in vulnerable situations.

c) Using diverse perspectives to make informed decisions: Reflecting on these conversations has influenced how I approach other projects and how I interact with new people.

d) Bridging cultural and social gaps: By participating in these weekly conversations, I help create a space where refugees and students feel heard and valued, fostering connections and mutual understanding.

Personal and Community Impact

Personally, this experience has taught me the importance of valuing diversity as a strength and inspired me to seek ways to create inclusive environments. It has also given me the opportunity to practice my English, learn new words, and improve my communication skills by engaging in meaningful conversations with the refugees.

At the same time, I encourage them to step out of their comfort zones regarding language barriers by fostering a safe space where they can practice their English and express themselves without fear of judgment. On a community level, these sessions help refugees feel more integrated, while students develop a broader global perspective, promoting mutual understanding that transcends cultural differences.
