Incorporating inquiry-based learning strategy, conceptual change model, POE and contextualization of lesson helped the learners to integrate their experiences, knowledge and learnings into real-life situations. The Thai Curriculum offers a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies that produces holistically developed learners ready to thrive in the different parts of the world. Their engagement with international contests in Science speaks of the quality of education they receive and the effective strategies that they are implementing.
INQUIRY BASED LEARNING
Some explains that a Science teacher is not really inclined with socio-cultural contexts for they heavily rely on investigations, findings and experimentations rather than superstitions. What caught my attention and interest when it comes to Inquiry Based Approach is the visibility of contextualization in all corners of the learning process. Thus, binding the two in one tail. Hitting two birds with one stone. And, even with a single glance, I fell in love with it, no matter how detailed and structured it is.
Incorporating the essence of culture in student’s learning process advocates a learning that leaves footprints on their minds and hearts. Contextualizing and aligning the lessons to what is observable in the surroundings makes learning relevant for many. It also increases learners’ confidence and enthusiasm as they share their experiences. Propagating this kind of strategy when it comes to teaching would actually keep each generation deeply inclined with the soul of their communities. Learning things that are close to our hearts are always something valuable and meaningful.
PREDICT, EXPLAIN, OBSERVE
Udonpittayanukoon also uses the POE Probes (Predict, Explain, Observe) to draw out students' thoughts and ideas that can be tested. It provides a quick way for teachers to acquire students' perceptions and assess the common grounds of the given learning topic. I also used this during my lesson implementation as per suggestion of my mentor, Dr. Chanchira of Udon Thani Rajabhat University.
CONCEPTUAL CHANGE MODEL
This opens a path of oppurtunity for learners to become aware of their own ideas by making predictions or hypothesis. It involves the commit to an outcome phase, followed by the belief exposure, confront belief, accommodation of the concept, extending the concept then going beyond. Thai learners and teachers have been using this strategy in order for students to instill fun, entertainment and kill boredom within the learning cycle. This strategy made the learners more active and participative to the class discussion.
