You can go to any police station, though it might be beneficial to go to a bigger one.
However, I have heard anecdotally that some stations will refuse to deal with foreigners and send you elsewhere. So, you might need to try a few places before you are successful.
There are two types of criminal record check:
신원조사 (범죄경력) 증명서 (Background Check (Criminal Records) Certificate)
This is the more basic criminal records check. To get this, you need your ARC and your passport. It takes about 5 minutes* to get.
범죄경력 희보서 (Criminal (Investigation) Records Check Reply with Lapsed Records)
This is the more detailed criminal records check. To get this, you'll need your passport, ARC, and one passport photo. It takes about a week*.
If you need this certificate for a job back home, you'll likely want the second one.
*The processing time may vary.
IMPORTANT:
It is illegal in Korea for them to give you this document for job purposes. Therefore, when they ask why you need this document, it is best to say it is for a visa. They'll ask which country, so have one ready! Do NOT tell them its for a job.
(Some people have also had success naming government agencies)
